The White Coat Diaries

I very much enjoyed this book. The representation made me feel seen and allowed me to reflect on all the experiences I’ve had until this point as someone in healthcare. The book shows what happens when a naive, idealistic person finally is immersed in reality, and reality bites back. The book is a commentary on the healthcare system that turns young, idealistic people into people who lack empathy. If you want to understand the emotions and struggles of people in healthcare, this is that book. (And it is a well written, enjoyable read!)

Very glad I took some time out of my schedule to read this. It’s a fictional novel whose main character is an Indian woman in residency. It lays bare a lot of the hardships and struggles of residency, some of the systematic problems seen in medicine & medical training, with a little romance thrown in. And add to that a cultural context of a main character coming from an Indian-Gujurathi background. While it sounds like a lot going on, but somehow it all meshes beautifully, & the main character is brought vividly to life.

I wanted to update my review since I finished the book. It was a great read especially for people who have experienced the medical training world or are planning to enter into the medical field. The story is very real and details the emotional journey of a young girl aspiring to be a doctor but who is facing a lot of personal challenges. The author, Madi Sinha is very good at setting up the imagery of each scene and the emotions that surround the main character so you feel you are on the journey with her. I am happy she also updated us on the other supporting characters and where they were in their journeys by the end of the book. Highly recommend and can\’t wait for Madi Sinha\’s next book!

I liked this book so much more than I thought I would! Emotionally honest and with one devastating twist, it\’s a quick read that\’s still captivating and gives real insight into what it\’s like for a doctor.

The author takes you into the world of a young female facing the challenges of medical school residency. Her situation is further complicated by the expectations of her Indian culture. She reveals a beautiful innocence and vulnerability that one would not expect given her high level of accomplishment. Some very good and interesting insights are revealed. This book is especially timely for the focus today on diversity and inclusion. Great job Madi!
