The Whole Enchilada Audiobook
The writing is clumsy. There are way too many people in this story to keep track of in an audio book. The author must cook by magic for she puts parties together between lots of breaks and through a lot of physical injury. When you go into a book like this I think one doesn’t expect C.S. Lewis, but rather something light and fun. I loved all the Denver references too.
The Whole Enchilada
I’ve read all the books in this series, and was looking forward to this new release. What a huge disappointment. I’ve tried twice, and just can’t finish it; it just doesn’t hold my interest. The plot is thin, and presented in a scatter-gun manner. The details are uninteresting: the whodunnit doesn’t beg to be solved.
The characters are similarly uninteresting. Goldy, always a scatter brain, is no longer charmingly so; she’s just irritatingly stupid. The performance is similarly annoying. The sotto voce so often used is just boring. Goldy has been a favorite for light reading since I picked up the first audiobook. This was to be a swing book between heavier reading, but I couldn’t force myself to finish it. A light book should hold the reader’s attention.
I am a big fan of the Diane Mott Davidson Colorado culinary mysteries. They are extremely re-readable, i.e., re-playable. This is exactly the kind of recorded book that makes for engrossing listening. The narrator, Barbara Rosenblatt, does a superior job on all voices, especially the main character, her best friend, her husband, and her son. This was my fourth time to listen to the entire 17 books in a row, and this last one is deeply satisfying. The author and the narrator really make you care and I confess to having tears in my eyes at the conclusion despite knowing exactly what would happen. Well-done, indeed! Fingers crossed that Davidson will one day write some sequels to the series.
I am a huge Diane Mott Davidson fan and am always looking for her next book. This one does not disappoint. Same great characters and lots of adventure. I really enjoy the narrator Barbara Rosenblat – she really brings the characters to life.
