The stories, traditions, cultures and attitudes bring back childhood memories of my own mother who struggled futilely for acceptance of her dreams from her family. She continued to struggle for acceptance into my father’s family, in a country which did not welcome her. Even though she made her home in the U.S., she longed to go home, knowing her family would not acknowledge her. My father did his best to create a loving home for her, and eventually retired near San Francisco, so she could at least capture the feelings of home through weekend visits to Nihonmachi. And Johns’ portrayal of Naoko at once makes me miss my mother so much more, yet provided me more depth of understanding of the bouts with sorrow she had. Truly a wonderful, poignant and truthful retelling of the times.

Tears kept flowing, thinking what happened to Hajime and Naoko could have been the same for my Japanese mother and her American sailor. Don’t know if my biological father knew of her pregnancy but reading every word that Ana had written, gave me hope that he did. So well written, so well researched, I imagined I was back in Japan, seeing every step Naoko and Hajime took. And Tori Kovak could be the biological family I recently discovered. There are not enough words that I can say to Ana Johns how grateful I am that she wrote “The Woman in the White Komono”. I hope thank you will suffice.

Audiobook The Woman in the White Kimono by Ana Johns

Before reading THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE KIMONO, I’d never heard of the plight of Japanese women who married American soldiers, but Naoko’s evocative and tragic experience exemplified many of the culturally-born horrors of the time. This historical/contemporary novel will work its way into your heart and will never let you go.

Bravo to author Ana Johns!

As someone who has lived in Japan, I would expect that the author had as well, given the meticulous attention to the little details. Add a compelling story of choices between love and duty, told with a genuine voice. I highly recommend it!

On the positive side, this is an excellent first novel by author Ana Johns. It is the kind of novel that you want to stay up and keep reading to find out what happens next. The story definitely holds your interest. As I am a frequent traveler to Japan, with a strong interest in Japanese literature, culture and history, I thought she did well in generally describing Japanese culture.

On the negative side, I thought some of the episodes were unrealistic, but after all, this is a novel, so that can be expected, just like in Hollywood. My major criticism is that it became political, describing tragic events that
took place over 70 years ago, which were cruel but certainly not mainstream. I felt that the book paints the Japanese with an undeserved broad brush for the acts of a very few evildoers many years ago. We Americans certainly aren’t perfect, as recent events have highlighted.

That said, if you want very serious reading that is generally well-written , I do recommend this book.
