Connolly continues to mesmerize and draw us into the world of Charlie Parker and his associates. There are many characters in this story, and Connolly writes them on a level I usually find only with Stephen King. If you’ve come this far in the series you have to keep going, and this one will not disappoint. If you haven’t read any of the series my advice is to go back to the beginning and start.

The Wrath of Angels series Charlie Parker

Connolly talks constantly about the nature of evil throughout this book, but never gets preachy. I consider that quite a feat. I am a new Connolly fan; his single led me to this series. The detective Charlie Parker is multi-faceted. He is not defensive of his motives, and weighs them constantly in a way that is not self serving. Plus he is funny, irreverent, and fully in possession of feet of clay. I also hold a special affection for his side kicks Angel and Louis. The all star supernatural cast has a number of villains, but more intriguing to me are the ones that walk close to the line of good and evil.

The plot held my attention at all times. It is complex and slippery and elusive at times, which I appreciate. Having lived in Maine for four years (and always regarded as an outsider), I especially enjoy the setting. Having been lost in the Maine woods more than once, I have always suspected that Stephen King, and now John Connolly, have more than a touch of reality in their fiction. This book evokes perfectly that tingle one gets down the spine when something uncanny appears in the woods.

I am picky about my fantasy/horror books; and even pickier when a detective shows up. I like a little philosophy (for want of a better word) in the mix, which this book delivers. I really like this one and plan to pick up more of his work.

Audiobook The Wrath of Angels by John Connolly

I have to admit my bias on this one as John Connolly has tied to become my favorie author along with James Lee Burke. All of his books, whether they be the Charlie Parker novels or his newest characters, are simply flawless. Although the authors are in the same category as “detective/mystery/suspense” novels, they could not be more different. While Burke’s Dave Robicheaux novels are somewhat formulaic, Connolly’s are not – yet they are written beautifully; poetry in novel form. Both authors’ writings stay with the reader long after finishing the books & it’s a definite you’ll go back to read Connolly’s again & again. Not only are the books suspenseful, full of breathtaking chances by the characters, but they are also filled with mysterious, unexplained spectres from Parker’s past leaving him with oh-so-many regrets of unfulfilled things he could have done, but in reality these things have happened for a reason, taken out of his hands for specific reasons he has yet to uncover. There are numerous links & events which are, without a doubt, attributed to the supernatural and Parker has yet to come to terms with all of them being linked in such a way. He becomes more of a believer with each book, coming closer to acceptance and adapting to the realization he also is part of a bigger plan from some sort of a Higher Power. These novels are, to me, essentially a struggle between good & evil with good winning out most of the time only to set the weakened evil back to regroup. Parker is a conundrum – is he good or is he fighting off the evil destined for him? Each book seems to pull him closer to the evil, yet he continues to fight his draw to it while using it to his advantage.

As always in the Parker series, his most trusted allies fight by his side without question. Angel’s apparent lack of fashion is again a source of laughter & derision & he’s particurlarly garish in this book. God bless him – Angel’s there more for the comedic value, but it’s impossible not to laugh out loud when reading the descriptions of his most horrible attire. Louis, Angel’s partner, is as resolute as ever and remains GQ wardrobe-wise. His love for Angel is deep & abiding though the two still bicker like an old married couple – I find this so funny given their extremely divurgent personalities. Walter (not the dog, the person) is on board for this case, and it’s great to see him back. He may not condone Parker’s methods (as a retired NYC detective), however; he is always willing to assist him as he feels indebted to Charlie for saving his daughter and he sees injustice in much the same way.

Some of the most mysterious & baffling of Parker’s past are back in this novel, and they remain as they’ve always been. The dynamic between Charlie & their pasts with him leads to more questions & Charlie wants answers. In order to get them, Charlie may have to team up with the one character he’s never been able to question, let alone stop his methods.

Parker also gets some much-needed time with his daughter, Samantha, and also gets some distressing news regarding her & his former love interest. He’s not a happy camper about things in this situation.

I recommend this book to all of those who truly love a suspenseful, mind-challenging, and fascinating read. If you enjoy this book, be sure to check out all of John Connolly’s “Charlie Parker” books. There are many of them & I’ll bet you won’t be able to put them down after the first page – they just suck you in & you’ll love them. Charlie Parker is probably the least unassuming hero you’ll ever meet! If you’ve ever been Portland, Maine, you’ll recognize some of the places mentioned in the books; if not – why haven’t you been there? Portland, Maine is one of the most beautiful places you’ll find in the US & the author describes it lovingly & so beautifully. He describes many other locations around the area, and since I’ve been to all these places, it’s so much fun to read about them! Mr. Connolly lives parts of the year in the area & knows it quite well. From his last email though, he tells me he’s taking off for the next year to write the NEXT Charlie Parker novel.

Audio The Wrath of Angels narrated by Jeff Harding

This is one of the best series I’ve read in a long time. I can’t just talk about this one book you’ve got to talk about the whole series and it’s entirety. The supernatural aspect the mysteries and Charlie Parker and those that surround him excellent characters and development. There are 15 bucks in total that are out right now. I’m on book number 13. I’ve been reading the series for the last several weeks. Some books I can read in a day some two days. These are books you cannot put down. And I picked thThe first one on a whim. I was looking for something different. Boy am I glad that I did. You won’t be disappointed with the series.

Who doesn’t like Charlie Parker and his gang of felonious misfits? Someone who has not read the preceding novels in this strange series. If I hadn’t been tuned into John Connolly for many years, I probably wouldn’t “get” him and his combination of detective story and “Otherness”. Much the same way that a new reader of F. Paul Wilson and his Repairman Jack series might cause he/she to wonder what they had gotten themselves into.

Both of these notable authors spin tales that require the reader to lightly step into an alternate universe and suspend disbelief until the plot lines draw you firmly into the story. Like tackling any series of books, it makes sense to begin at the beginning so that you watch the characters develop with each story. Angel, Louis, and the Fulcis didn’t get much play in this book so new readers don’t know what they bring to the table. Trust me, from reading past novels in this series, what they bring is considerable and powerful. Start at the beginning and enjoy the ride.
