After finishing ‘Razer’s Ride’, I was equal parts intrigued and disgusted by Ms. Begley’s ‘The Last Riders’ series. This is definitely not a MC romance series for everyone. The members of The Last Riders, both male and female, are completely sexually uninhibited. Exhibitionism, voyeurism, mnage, and virtually anything you can think of sexually, are commonplace in their clubhouse. The club hosts a Friday night party, which is essentially a big orgy, not that they seem to restrain themselves any other day of the week. So, if you choose to read this series, be forewarned.
I’m not a reader that has many triggers or topics, such as cheating or abuse, that are absolutely “no-go” zones for me. However, I have to admit that I find the behavior of The Last Riders’ members to push my boundaries. It isn’t any one thing, but rather the collective behavior of the group toward sex that I find rather sleazy. All of the male members are these high-handed, manwhores. The female members, with the exception of the heroine’s from each book, have been trashy nymphs with no self-respect or concern for their supposed friends.
That being said, I did find myself liking this story in spite of myself. This series seems to invoke that type of response from me. I know I should be appalled by the behavior of the characters, and I am on some level, but I’m also sucked into the story nonetheless.
This second book in the series tells the story of Viper and Winter. If you read ‘Razer’s Ride’, you probably remember that the successful businessman, Loker James, was none other than the President of The Last Riders, aka Viper. He had been “undercover” for the past two years, integrating himself into the community, while trying to solve the mystery of his brother’s murder.
During that time, Viper had been “casually” dating Winter Simmons, the local high school Principal. Of course, how “casual” their relationship was is up for debate. It seems that poor Winter didn’t get the memo.
In the beginning, Winter stays strong. I was proud of her. Even though she was hurt, she sent him packing. I appreciated that she knew what her limits were and stood her ground.
Viper knows that he’s screwed up big time. He wants her back, but knows that what he did is unforgivable. So, like the manwhore he is, he immerses himself in the club life.
When Winter is attacked one night, she is nearly killed. After a long hospitalization, followed by a stay in a rehabilitation center, Winter still has a long road ahead of her. Unable to walk or care for herself, Viper arranges to have her tricked into staying at The Last Riders’ clubhouse to recuperate. Of course, this will give him several weeks to try and win her back over. I’m sure you can imagine where the story goes from there.
I liked the story and again, found myself rooting for the “hero”, in spite of my reservations. The editing still needed a lot of work, but was improved significantly from the first book. If you’re a stickler for grammar, this one will still have you cringing at several points. One error that drove me crazy was the misuse of the word “conscious” in place of “conscience”. I was hoping that somebody would’ve clued the author in after the first book, but it apparently didn’t happen.
I also couldn’t help but notice the similarities in the storyline to the first book. A very reserved, uptight, good-girl meets motorcycle-riding, promiscuous bad-boy. They break up. He realizes that he wants her back. Something happens that requires her to stay at the clubhouse where he can work his charms on her and win his way back into her good graces. Change the names of the main characters and you’ve got another book.
Another issue that I have had with this series is how quick the “good-girls” turn “bad”. I don’t see why they need to lose their inhibitions and participate, albeit to a lesser extent, in the sexual depravity of the club. It just doesn’t ring true to me. I’m not sure why the author seems to make it a rite of passage for her heroines, but I don’t like it. To me, it cheapens them and is inconsistent with their characters’ personalities, which is what drew the heroes to them in the first place. Let’s face it, if they wanted a woman with no self-regard that was willing to do whatever, wherever, they could take their pick of the women already a part of their shameless MC.
All in all, I thought this book was better than the first book, but it still needs some work. As much as I’d like to hang on to my righteous indignation, I have to admit that I’ve allowed myself to get sucked into the lives of The Last Riders MC, trashy as they may be. I’m also still dying to read Shade and Lily’s story. This book provided a little teaser for me, but I need more.

Viper\’s Run audiobook in series Last Riders
Great journey. I love this book. It has great push and pull. The two characters are engaged in a twisted dance. Loker James is dating Winter and keeping her at arms length for two years. Yes, I say again, two years. Winter is part idiot and part saint. During this time Loker was not doing without, he had so many side pieces it was a circular buffet. Mind blowing. Even as Winter realizes things arent right- she continues with this twisted dance. Until things come to a head- the big reveal- hes not just Loker James hes a Last Rider and also their President.
Even then, he wont admit hes wrong. Wont admit he really likes Winter- not until shes attacked in the school parking lot. Shes left crippled. Now, now Loker wants to keep Winter, and keep her close. Winter paid a high price to get his attention- aka his head out of his rear.
Her time at the club house is highly entertaining for me, that place is crayZeeeee. Very humorous interactions with the Biker Bs- crazy B, killlyama, et al. THEY give all new meaning to crazy and I truly admire they way these characters are written; as well as how loyal they are to each other. Great book. Highly Recommend.

Audiobook Viper\’s Run by Jamie Begley
Viper and Winter, where do I begin. This is the second book in The Last Riders Series and I’ve noticed a pattern. These men do not go for women who are your typical biker chicks. While in the back of mind I’m wondering why Winter “dated” this man for so long without having a talk about where it was going, I felt bad for her. She truly thought this was normal. Boy was she surprised when she found out who he was and what he does at his clubhouse! I totally understand her feeling of embarrassment and sadness that he strung her along all that time to get to her family. In the end, I understand and respect Viper for not sleeping with her during that time. Although it hurt her to find out the truth, you got to respect that he didn’t sleep with her anyway.
After she was hurt I was a little surprised that he wouldn’t leave the hospital and was going to take care of her during her recovery. Being they didn’t have a real relationship yet I was thinking it was a little weird. Plus, the club had his back and were down for her to take over their space for it. These men definitely know how to get you to see it their way. Every time she called someone to get her they were like no your good where you are! I really liked these two together.
Jamie Begley, I love how you keep all the other characters storylines building in every book. It just makes me excited to read about them when their book comes!

Audio Viper\’s Run narrated by Elizabeth Hart
This story is book 2 in the series. It’s better to read the stories in order. Winter has been dating Loker James for two years. He has helped her through the hard time of her mother’s passing. She has a problem, he doesn’t seem to want to deepen their relationship. Loker’s only focus is finding his brothers killer, he doesn’t really care about who get hurts in the process. Plus, Loker has a secret.
Loker is Viper, the President of The Last Rider’s MC. When Winter finds out it destroys a part off her and she’s just done. But the unimaginable happens and Loker is left with the consequences of his actions. As As Winter tries to heal, Loker decides she’s his. But he’s coming to realize that she might never forgive him.
This book made me Ugly Cry…a lot! It made me laugh and angry. The things Winter went through and put up with… mind boggling. I wouldn’t have been so forgiving. Excellent book!
