So… that was painful to read. I hate to be a downer because there are some cute moments in the book, but our couple is actually just a pair of roommates who SLEEP WITH OTHER PEOPLE for nearly the entire book – literally in the room next door to each other. I get that the premise of the book is that Jess has to watch Alex with another woman while she has unrequited feelings for him, but thats not really what happened here. Alex went through a tough breakup and isnt ready to start something serious, so he likes and starts falling for Jess during the day then sleeps with another woman at night and Jess has to wear earplugs so she doesnt have to hear it. And not just for a small portion of the book – there are other people in the way of them being together until the final chapters. Thats… too much for me.

I could really go off on a rant about how cringeworthy it is that these two fall in love while having sex with other people, so instead I will mention what I DID like about the book. The writing itself was fine (if not a bit drawn out) – the descriptions of London really paint the scene, and the characters are well developed. I like the concept of two housemates falling in love even if the execution didnt work for me. The romance itself is really understated; most of Jess and Alexs time together is spent during their walks of London and theres a serious lack of chemistry between them. Theres no explicit sex so its clean, but I find it difficult to believe that anyone who prefers a clean romance would appreciate the other woman/man drama. Ultimately, this one wasnt for me, but I appreciated receiving an ARC from NetGalley. I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Nope. Didn’t like this one and was sorely disappointed, because I was so ready to jump into this romance.

Alex and Jess have zero chemistry, when I read instant romance, I expected an actual connection. Sparks, talking all night, a brush of a hand, anything. Not a “washing dishes while telling our stories” kind of connection, where Alex clearly says he is not looking for a relationship because he literally just cancelled his wedding after breaking up with his ex-fiance. Makes no sense to me.

Jess leaves for a short holiday, can’t stop thinking about this guy who told her he is not looking for anything serious, comes back to find out he’s hooking up with their other flatmate, Emma. And oh, it’s purely a friends-with-benefits kind of situation, because remember, Alex is not looking for anything serious.

Mad. How is that romantic in any way?

And as Jess pines over Alex, they start going on random, very boring, walks together, sharing tidbits of each others’ lives, which for me, just made it more and more clear that they are not right for each other. We go through the year, month by month, as they become good friends (with zero chemistry otherwise), and Alex somehow, finds himself in bed with Emma…again. What annoys me is that Rosie Curtis writes that in, in a way that makes you feel like it’s OK, and it doesn’t mean anything, but seriously? I would question any guy that is leading you on, while hooking up with another girl, and still claiming he’s not looking for anything serious. It was ridiculous.

It was quite the boring book, and to make matters worse, the two love interests finally find each other and proclaim their love for each other towards the very end of the book with only a couple of pages to spare. Nope, I did not sign up for this.

Audiobook We Met in December by Rosie Curtis

One of my guilty pleasures is cheesy, predictable romance/Hallmark movies. I found this book to be VERY cheesy and predictable which made it kind of hard to get into. Despite that, since I was reading it for a book club, I was able to knock it out in about a day.

If you like a predictable romance with little to no other plot, this is the read for you.

Audio We Met in December narrated by Jessica Preddy; Oliver Walker

I came across a recommendation for this book on Instragram and decided to give it a go. I really struggled to get through the book, and towards the end I was basically just skimming it. I found it to be rather vapid and unispired.

Fun story, but the author switches characters unevenly that is more distracting than anything else. Is it love at first sight or does it develop?
