The book is pretty much a page turner. There are a number of murders in a small community in the middle of a very harsh winter. Lucas is invited to participate in trying to solve them.
Mr. Sandford writes a very detailed book with a good plot. Despite his detail, the book keeps moving at an even pace. The reader is introduced to the murderer, termed Iceman, early on; but really has no idea who he his until much later in the book. It does well in keeping the reader entertained and on the edge of the seat.
My only cons dont affect the book at all. Lucass new love, Weather, is introduced. Having read Prey books out of order I find she becomes an annoyance in some later books. The editor would do well to have changed Should of to Should have. on a few occasions.
This is certainly one of the best in the Prey series and not to be missed

Sandford is the master and Davenport is his guy. I think Davenport is part Sandford and part his creation. I’m 22 Prey books into this.
My only disappointment is the sole movie creation of the Prey Series, “Certain Prey “.
My gut tells me that my reading imagination surpasses the film adaptation. I just wish they’d give it another shot, perhaps with a different Lucas Davenport . Love Harmon, but the film seemed like an attempt to put the story into an NCIS format. It’s so special that, this simply cannot work. Please somebody in Hollywood land, bring us Lucas Davenport on the screen.

Audiobook Winter Prey by John Sandford
First, Davenport meets Weather, which is a big plus for the story particularly given what happened two books ago. Second, the mystery around who the Ice Man really is is masterfully put together, just beautifully constructed even though we are with the Ice Man’s point of view throughout the book. Lastly Sanford has an eye for detail that you really appreciate as a reader. It’s never too much or contrived, but you read this one and the vividness of the portrayals demonstrates true command of the subject matter, which in this case is small town Minnesota during a brutal cold spell…

Audio Winter Prey narrated by Richard Ferrone
First off, I only got 9% into the story, just couldn’t read any more. Came back to Amazon to see what others had said and was greatly surprised at all of the good reviews. What I read was far too cliched (that gol-darn sheriff, for one), dated and predictable for me to continue. It’s very possible the plot is good, but I don’t care enough to find out.
Btw, I read his Sudden Prey in 1996 or 97, and enjoyed it. This one, I can’t recommend.

A fantastic book written by one of the most talented mystery writers in this genre. I am a fan of the Davenport series and my favorite characters. This novel takes Lucas to a small Wisconsin community during a very bitter winter with a killer on the loose. This is where he meets Weather Karkinnen, a doctor who he becomes attracted to. As the bodies pile up Lucas must use all of his skills to stop this killer before anymore people die. This is his best book so far. A must read.
