I loved the first 2 books of this series, so I was disappointed with this one. It failed to live up to the others. The same characters are in the book, but, to me, this book was very disconnected from the story line. We have now made Sam and Gwen amateur detectives solving crimes that have nothing to do with them. It was an empty novel with lots of \”fluff\”. I sped read it in a few hours. Sorry Rachel, I think this third novel could have potentially been so much more. I felt you were just in a hurry to get the last one done or ran out of storyline.

I really expected to enjoy this book a lot but the best I it\’s really just \’okay\’. I was particularly disturbed but the fact that the author felt that she needed to call out the race of anyone who is black in this book. Why was there a need to state that someone is \’African American\’ or \’Black\’? Why was there a need to say someone is \’White\’? The author did not make these distinctions in the other books in this series and race was affirmed by her descriptions of the characters. Is this a sign of our times that an author feels the need to make these sort of commentary just for the sake of calling out someone\’s race? I am disappointed that this author felt the need to do this and probably will not read any more of her books.

Review #3

Audiobook Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine

Im always scared that Im going to get hurt, even when nobody wants to hurt me. Which is why I reject people hard, first. Im trying not to do that anymore. I fell in love with Dahlia; she makes my heart race and makes me want to cry inside when were separated, and thats what love is, right?* I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Gwen Proctor is back in the public eye as the relative of one of her husbands victims renews her efforts to seek revenge via media and internet smear campaigns. Their goal is to continue to paint Gwen as a partner in her husbands murder spree, when in reality, she was also a victim of his lies and manipulation, and nearly killed at his hand. All Gwen wants to do is to raise her kids, Lanny and Conner, in peace, but the public wants them all to pay dearly for their imagined crimes. A phone call seeking help provides the perfect excuse for the Proctor family to flee their problems, however, nosing into the case of a young girl accused of killing her mother in cold blood brings more trouble for Gwen and puts a new target on her back. Meanwhile, she discovers a secret that could rupture her relationship with Sam. Not only does she need to protect the lives of herself and her kids, she also must protect her heart. WOLFHUNTER RIVER is told through the points of view of Gwen, Sam, and Gwens children, which provides each of their unique perspectives. There is no shortage of action in this installment due to the enormous number of people setting their sights, literally and figuratively, on Gwen and her loved ones. I believed this series was originally set to be a trilogy, but a fourth book, BITTER FALLS, is in the works, and WOLFHUNTER RIVER provides a great set up to take the series in a new direction. Each book in the series stands on its own and delves deep into the hearts of the characters as well as providing an engaging plot. Watching Lanny and Conner develop and grow into their own people is a treat. I look forward to continuing the journey with this great series. Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to experience this book in advance of its release. *Please note that my review is based on uncorrected text.

Review #4

Audio Wolfhunter River narrated by Dan John Miller Emily Sutton-Smith Lauren Ezzo Will Ropp

I appreciate the reviews on bad editing in a book. I appreciate the reviews about some of the storyline and that there are twists. Sometimes the reviews sound like English teachers and professors grading the works. I am not reading for Pulitzer prize-winning essay. I read for entertainment and escape. I look for strong fighting and surviving women. This author checks all my boxes. And the heroine grows with each challenge that is forced upon her. You go Rachel Caine!

This author should have stopped after #2. I enjoyed #1 and #2 but the final effort in this trilogy was forced and unbelievable. Gwen has become a cress between Wonder Woman and Joan of Arc.
