Yes, My Accent Is Real: and Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You

There are a few things you should understand before buying this book.

First off, it’s not a biography. Second, there’s very little in the book about “The Big Bang Theory”; in fact, just one small section about how Kunal tried out for the role and how all that went down. Third, you won’t find too much that’s profound here, although some of the things Kunal’s father taught him would be good for all people to consider.

“The Big Bang Theory” is one of my all-time favorite television shows, and that’s saying a lot since I’m in my mid-60s. And, Raj is my favorite character. I’ve seen Kunal on quite a few of the late night talk shows and he always seemed like a very nice guy. But I wondered…is he, indeed, a very nice guy? And that’s the question this book answers through a series of short “essays” (perhaps better to call them “reflections”). And the answer is yes, he seems like a genuinely nice person who’s rather sensitive and perhaps a tad insecure. He comes across as “real”, and I couldn’t help but hope that he stays that way despite being a television star.

Bottom lines — a pleasant, sometimes humorous read (but not laugh out loud funny); a nice guy who would probably be a very good friend; a gentle book (but not earth shattering). The “niceness” that shows through on “The Big Bang Theory” and television interviews is very probably well justified.

Raj was my favorite character on “The Big Bang Theory” for the majority of seasons, so I really wanted to read Nayyar’s memoir to get a sense of who he is outside of his character on the show. I have seen him in TV interviews, and he is always pretty charming and funny. This memoir did not make him any less so. He is quite witty and his story was fun and mostly light-hearted. I really enjoyed reading it and actually kept my copy to read again or loan out to friends.

This is a memoir, anecdotes, musings that are funny, warm heartfelt and honest. While no saint, Kunal Nayyar is a one of the good guys. He writes about his youth, family, college days, loves, friendships, how he came to his career and his big break. He does it with candor, humor, a bit of self-deprecation and some soul-baring. I think I spent quite a bit of time smiling as I read this book.

Although I am older than the targeted age group forThe Big Bang Theory, I am a big fan of the program and never miss an episode. The character Raj is one of my favorites, and this memoir by the actor who portrays Raj is a delight to read. His account of how he came to this country, how he accidentally became an actor, and how he got the role of Raj, is interesting and a great example of how opportunity can unexpectedly present itself and how we should be open to investigating it when it appears.

I only read the first few chapters, & skipped the one that was ALL about chasing women, because the theme of these chapters seemed to be all about how he fantasized & wanted girls. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But, it doesn’t make for an interesting book. Or reflect the title. Boring.
