The Vexed Generation

Great book! Really enjoyed it! Phillip towards the end goes on a political rant about people in power and how they can’t do anything without people’s support. It is clearly anti-Trump and that doesn’t make sense as he actually has a lot of support. I mean love him or hate him (I don’t like him personally but I back him, come on, you think I’ll vote for Warren??), he has a lot of popular support or at least support. When the election comes remember these 7 words, “tax cuts Ruth Bader Ginsburg Clarence Thomas.” Then you’ll understand why he’s re-elected.

I absolutely loved the first book in the series, very much liked the second one, and enjoyed the next ones, just a little less every time. This one here, meh. I could have done without it, really. I didn’t need another reminder of no matter what you think, Philipp wouldn’t do something bad. I didn’t need another this is how magic works reminder, as that’s what the first book was all about. And when I got to the point where the whole book just seemed written to make a political statement I just cringed, even though I fully agree with the statement. There is too much repetition, too little novel content here. The characters aren’t really characters any more, just names from a list and totally interchangeable.
I think the series had a good run and I had some good laughs with it, but this one here made me feel like reading it was a chore (like watching the new Star Wars trilogy – you know you have to do it, but know you won’t get what you’re hoping for).
Also dropped one star for over-use of “writhing”. I hate that word.

I’ve enjoyed this series from book 1, and I have to say after the weirdness of the last 2 entries focusing on time travel and causality, this one feels fresh, rather like the first book. From the children’s viewpoint, magic is new and exciting again.

The diatribe or political bit that other reviewers mention is all of half a page, and played for laughs more than anything.

I’ve not been disappointed by any Scott Meyer books, even the single Magic 2.0 book that made some other readers grumpy. This one is just fine, although the explanation of how the ‘magic’ works is a bit hurried for narrative reasons. IMO it’s important to start at the beginning (Off to be the Wizard) which has the most laughs-per-page anyway. Highly recommended.

I would point out to the uninitiated that the covers of these books are designed to appear deliberately pixelated. Don’t be put off by that, these are good books.

I’ve been a fan of the Magic 2.0 series from the start, and have to admit that the last book or two have started to feel a bit stale, like Scott might be running low on material. This book more than makes up for it, by introducing a whole new set of protagonists, in the best way possible. Great new perspectives, with several new openings to carry this series for at least a while longer. If you like the early Magic 2.0 books, you’ll love this one.
