Monster Hunter Vendetta

I don’t write book and movie reviews. Good reviews take intelligence. In fact, even poorly written reviews take more intelligence than I have left. So, I’ll just tell you what I like about the Monster Hunter books: They don’t end too soon. They have fairly complex plots (but not so complex my decomposing sentience can’t cope), and it has characters you can care about. In the early books, a character might seem flat, but later books fills the character out, revealing surprising information, and even making you care about them.

Note that John Ringo has also written a couple of MHI (Monster Hunters International) books with Larry Correia supervising. These are pretty good, too – worth reading, if you like MonsterSplatter. They fit well as side stories to the main series.

I just recently purchased this book (and the rest of the series) for a re-read since it has been several years since it came out and I read it the first time.

Just finished! This book continues the story of OZP, the protagonist from the first book. Correia has found a formula that works well for him. A gripping story of monsters, guns, and what it takes to be a hero.

The story holds up even on a re-read. Sure I know whats coming, somewhat, as it has been about 5 years since the first read. But even so, the story and characters are compelling and as the series progresses Larry Correia becomes more polished as a writer.

If you like your action straightforward, and your villains simple, this is the series for you. The human characters are well written, and for the most part, they speak in distinctive voices, so the story is easy to follow. On the other hand, the monsters are pretty generically written, with alignments, behaviors, and personality determined more by species than by individual personality or temprament.
That tends to make most story pretty flat, with the depth coming from the human interactions exclusively. It would be nice to see some more morally gray, or even objectively “good” members of various monster species.
As the storyverse stands by this book, its pretty formulaic, with most humans either assets, liabilities, or obstructions, but that may be more the mindset of the narrator.
Your mileage may vary, but you wont feel like you’ve wasted your money.

Mr. Correia is great at story telling. I’ve never really been a fan of fiction but this is the exception. I was thoroughly impressed by his first book and couldn’t imagine this 2nd one could be better. But it is. In this book he has richer descriptions of the events that unfold. Both 1st and 2nd books are impressive stories.
I don’t understand how some authors come up with these astounding tales of adventure without actually living them or witnessing them. Maybe real in another dimension?

That moment when you find that book series that you didn’t know you were missing. this series came out of left food as i was looking at a co-workers book during down time. I was no expecting this series to hit me like a Mack truck with how good it is. This series could easily be an HBO series. Vendetta was better then the first book with lots of humor, twists and turns. a must read for anybody who wants to see fairy tale/horror creature get their butts kicked.
