The Long and Short of It

I pretty consistently rave about Jodi Taylor’s St Mary’s Chronicles, but only because they deserve higher praise than I can put into words. They are the best time travel tales (apologies to Dr. Bairstow for mentioning time travel) ever written. Great characters, intriguing, adventurous plots, side-splitting humor. Her novels are superb and these short stories fill in adventures that are alluded to, but not explained, in those novels. Even her forwards are brilliant. I am not, as a rule, a fan of short stories, but I’ve already purchased and read all eleven of her full length novels and both of her short story collections. I’ve also pre-ordered her 12th St Mary’s novel and am drooling in anticipation. It’s her sterling voice, you see. It’s captivating.

My main complaint about the St. Mary’s novels were they read like a bunch of short stories instead of a novel. Here, Taylor shines because it is short stories and she’s not trying to combine them into one bigger story. These fill in some holes in the novels. They may not make sense if you haven’t read other St. Mary’s stories. If you have, they are a romp through time with your favorite characters and will leave you laughing.

I love the whole St. Mary’s series. Jodi Taylor is amazing! I had read many of these short stories before, but it’s nice to have them in an anthology. Of course, since they are part of the larger series, it helps to have read the full-length novels that precede some of the stories in order to get a better sense of context and characters. That said, however, the short stories can stand on their own and make great reading.
