Interference

While it isn’t my typical go-to genre, I love a good thriller. I\’ll admit that my preference is more for the relatively bloodless kind, like psychological, medical, scientific, or legal. So, this thriller served me several of my favorite types. Unusually for a thriller, this one made me laugh at some observations of the scientist’s wife (like her thoughts on getting out of bed or having more children), who is one of the viewpoint characters. I was also emotionally touched by the first chapter from the retired police officer’s viewpoint. While the first chapter told from the perspective of the would-be investor billionaire didn\’t have the emotional spectrum provided by the other characters just mentioned, it did give us crucial insight into why he cared about this scientist\’s work. The author was able to make these key characters come alive with vivid detail, giving them unique traits and making them feel like realistic, nuanced, and truly believable individuals. With such a great setup for some key players, things get really interesting as the plot heats up. First things veer into the medical thriller realm as the scientist at the core of the story is suffering strange fits that cannot be explained by doctors except by, perhaps, a somewhat ill-fitting theory of conversion disorder. He’s a physicist involved in quantum entanglement. While he feels like he is close to a breakthrough, he is not there, but his work has caused interest in very different people (or groups of them), like the billionaire investor hoping to fund a legacy, the Chinese, and others. And then the physicist goes missing. I found this to be a gripping, unputdownable, which is something I rarely say in reviews. I loved the science, the medical issues (as an RN), and of course, the suspense that needs to be at the core of a good thriller. Highly recommended.

Overall, this was a well-plotted and engaging crime thriller that maintained the suspense until nearly the end. It was easy to read through in one sitting, and held my attention throughout. What I liked about this book: – The story itself was a well-written crime novel, probably not one of the top books in the genre, but overall it was good. – The alternating chapters in first and third person voices worked effectively for the characters, and allowed them to show and tell their stories in this book. – Medical professionals will likely notice that most of the details, from a patient’s perspective, about the hospital and the ICU experience, were accurate and well done. Likewise many of the descriptions of the experiences of hearing impaired persons was realistic. What I didn’t like so much: – There was a somewhat obscene slur used three times against people from Massachusetts. It didn’t really contribute to the story and could have been left out. – In a not so subtle way, there is also perhaps a not so subtle put down of the Marine Corps, with a character referred to as a former Marine and then immediately framed as his “oorah days” being over, working at a desk, and thickening around the middle. – Quantum Physics was a big theme of this book, but not much explanation of the concepts integrated into the storyline, other novels have done this much better. If the physics had been better represented in this story, there would have been no need to introduce and try to explain it in a Preface. It would have been better I think to drop the Preface and let the whole quantum entanglement theme unfold in the novel. Other Interesting things in this Novel: – The idea that Quantum Entanglement might explain certain psychic phenomena – I learned what an Alberta Clipper is – I learned something about the cryptocurrency, Zcash, which I looked up on the Internet after finishing this book – I learned that all U.S. currency bills weigh exactly 1 gram, which I also verified with an Internet search after finishing this book. Since there are 454 grams to a pound, it is possible with a calculator to quickly know the weight of any stack of bills Overall, I think it is a good book, and I would have given it 4 stars. I downgraded to 3 stars because of the weak representation of the actual science of quantum physics within the story and the spoiler of sorts in the Preface, as well as the unnecessary and off putting comments referencing the Marines, and people connected to the State of Massachusetts.

A shallow and extremely convuluted tale of betrayal, ambition, and greed. I was attracted by the Quantum Entanglement described in the book synopsis. Don\’t be fooled if you are a fan of Science Fiction, the science is cursory and misunderstood by the author. The characters are cartoonish and stereotyped. Hackneyed, comes to mind when describing this waste of digital media.

What the hell kind of description is this for a woman in the middle of her life? A deaf spoon, dull and unattractive?! I had been interested in reading this book but the misogyny and ageism turned me right off. I\’m the same age as this character, and I find this view of middle-aged women degrading and sexist. I\’m sorry I chose this book for my First Read, as I would like to return it!

I love it when the first of the Month is a Saturday as it means I get my Amazon First reads on a day I can throw myself into madly swiping and finishing the book in one sitting. This was an usual pick for me as I don’t find Thriller’s too relaxing, that being said ‘Interference’ was a gripping read that I absolutely devoured in a few hours. Matt Bronik, professor of physics is on the cusp of a scientific breakthrough, one so huge it could earn him a Nobel prize. All of that changes, when he begins to have fits that can\’t be explained by medical doctors and then he mysteriously disappears… When foul play is feared, there is no shortage of suspects. Matt’s research had gained the attention of Chinese competitors, an unscrupulous billionaire, and the Department of Defence… among others. I enjoyed the police procedural aspects of this novel and thought each of the characters were believable. While some chapters were heavily scientific, others focused more on human interest and the detective work hence I found it very well balanced and at its core ‘Interference’ is a good thriller.
