My 9 year old, loves Stuart Gibbs books and has the full collection of spy school series so we were excited for this latest release. We are 14 chapters in, and it\’s a great story per usual, but I felt the need to leave a review that is both positive but also a word of caution. on page 174 of the hard cover copy in chapter 13, a character makes a comment that suggests believing in the tooth fairy is childish and there is no rebuttal to that. I feel fortunate enough that my 9 year old still seems to believe in tooth fairy and santa, so I omitted reading that part. If anyone else has a younger fan of stuart gibbs in their household who is in the same boat, that is a brief but important moment of the story you might want to be prepared for.

NOTE: BIG SPOILERS AHEAD!!! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!! This book had an interesting plot twist. Erica attempted to blow up Ben, Ben’s parents, and even her own father (although she was blackmailed into doing so and purposely missed). No one believes she is innocent except Ben himself. Much later in the book, Erica states how she thought of Ben as everything she thought Joshua was (before he turned evil) – remember in book 1 where Erica promised Ben she would hug him? (long story) well, she finally did, after 430 days. Ben then tried to figure out if Erica wanted him to kiss her (I don\’t know if this is a spy or romance novel anymore, but) he decided he would do it anyway, regardless of if she wanted it or not. Just as he was about to, Erica jumped away and pretended to be talking about how to foil Croatoan\’s plans. Ben wasn\’t sure what Erica was trying to do until Chip walked in. Erica was probably about to kiss him at the end of the book, but they were interrupted yet again. (I think Stuart is trying to show that although there was a fatal blow to it, there is still hope for Zen.) the war continues, Berica vs Zen. I think the next book will decide which once and for all.

This may be my favorite one so far! I love the fight against SPYDER, but it was nice to take on a new enemy. I loved the codes, search through history, the fabled colonial-era insurgent group, and Ben\’s unwavering faith in his friend and fellow spy, Erica. It shows Ben\’s loyalty and willingness to go the extra mile to save someone he believes. This was such a pleasurable read! I loved the new villians, the devious twists, Erica\’s involvement, and how it all impacts his team. You also get to see Ben\’s parents again, and it\’s nice to have them reunited. It\’s, also, lovely to watch the plot unfold. Basically, there\’s a lot happening here and is an intrepid and valiant conspiracy. I loved every second of it, and I\’ll continue to share with others and look forward to more of Mr. Stuart Gibbs\’ work.
