Snapped (Playbook #4)

In the author’s note at the beginning of the book, Alexa wrote that she hoped I would “finish [the book] more open to understanding the journeys of self-discovery and acceptance that so many of us are on.” Having read the other three books, I was curious how she would treat this divisive topic and maintain her funny and sexy writing style. I shouldn’t have been concerned. This book exceeded my expectations and more than met hers. I found it to be humorous, sexy, timely and relevant.

I knew from the Authors beginning notes that I was going to enjoy this one; she tackled a hard subject for some and I can honestly say she did it very gracefully; Bravo.

Before I get to the meat and potatoes of this book, let me just state that My Vonnie (yes, she’s my book BFF too) truly needs to have her story written; or at least an update bc my boo deserves happiness. Her and those little men of hers. I loved her & Justin as a couple, so yeah, I need updates.

Ok, on to this book. Elliot was so oblivious to racism that it was scary. Scary to think that there are so many people just like her in the real world. Quinton was just what she needed. I was a bit annoyed by her friends, Liv & Marie, seeing the blatant disregard for the things Elliot was brushing off, or laughing off, and not saying anything to her, yet I kind of understand how awkward that must’ve been for them, as 2 white women, to see racism being thrown at their half black, half white friend, and not know what to do to make her see it was wrong. And I know Elliots dad died, probably in one of the most horrific ways imaginable, yet I really hated that he raised her to NOT see color, which lead to her disregard for the things she did all her life. Thank goodness for friends who don’t hold back, like the Lady Mustangs, who helped Elliott in the end. Gotta Love those Dang Lady Mustangs.

Mr. Quinton Howard. My heart hurt for him from the beginning. Even with him being rude to Elliott at their first meeting, I hurt for him. I have no idea what it must be like being faced with the things most professional Black male athletes go through daily, yet this was much bigger than his mistreatment; it was about his dad and his mistreatment as a football veteran and others like them both, on and off the field. I really liked him and was so glad he opened up about his family issues with Elliott.

This was such a great way to end the series. Even though there were only originally going to be 3 books, I’m so glad the author wrote this 4th one. It fit in very well with the others and didn’t feel forced. I love that the author put more of her own biracial experience in this book and tackled that topic as well. Very well written and super entertaining.

Highly recommend this series.

I wanted to like this book but it was kind of a let down. Elliot was undeveloped & too guarded. There were plenty of times the author could have given a more in depth look at Elliots past but instead wed get a line or two and itd be dropped until her next breakdown, there definitely couldve been more oomph behind her. Quinton was a disappointment only bc the author started the book out like itd be two perspectives but instead she just sort of left him hanging with an occasional bit of substance, leaving him undeveloped, which sucks given that hes the main character. Aside from a moment or two of vulnerability he couldve easily been a lady mustang and just been part of the background, which was unfortunate bc he wouldve been a great character to truly get to know.
My issue with racism was that this too was poorly written into the narrative. She glossed over the racial part and turned it more into the treatment of players after retirement. The author watered it down just the same way Elliot had all her life and it was disappointing & shallow. If she wasnt truly comfortable with talking about race, the author shouldve just left it out entirely.
There were funny moments here and there, but eh.

I enjoyed this book much more than book 3. I also like the addition on the kneeling and acknowledgment of the social injustices going on in the world today. I think Elles character was a great representation of how some biracial people feel and think, especially when theyve only been influenced or raised by one of their races. But can we PLEASE get Vonnies story next….I mean its writing itself at this point.

I enjoyed reading the first three books in the series and thought I’d complete it with number 4. I actually think it’s the best one of the series! Alexa Martin does a terrific job with the romantic content as well as the football descriptions. I learned something and was pleasantly entertained. She really knows her stuff and it shows. Alexa Martin is a strong writer who made each of the four books a little different; something I really appreciated; each book was original. Out of the four books, I liked #1 and #4 best but the others were also a good read. Hoping for more books!
