Captain Lacey had been loyal to his friend and mentor Major Brandon, even after Brandon betrayed him. Louisa Brandon loved her husband, even after he tried to set her aside to marry someone else who could give him children. Now Brandon has been arrested for murder because of the woman he had thought to marry, and it’s up to Captain Lacey to prove his former friend to be not guilty. The interest/budding romance with Lady Breckenridge hits a few snags. And what is Captain Lacey to do about the wife who ran away 15 years ago? A Body in Berkeley Square is another fascinating mystery set in the Regency era.

A Body in Berkeley Square audiobook Series Captain Lacey
If you are a fan of this series, which I am, you will be both pleased and a little unsettled to see that so many issues are resolved in this novel. In many instances it is much better to read series books in order so that you understand what has gone on before to build the characters into the people we encounter in this situation. I was very pleased to see that Ashley Gardner did a truly superb job of bringing new readers up to the present with this entire cast of characters with short, concise wording and descriptions. This, of all the other books I’ve read in this series, can truly be a stand alone.
One of the failings of this series, from my point of view, is that the same characters are present in all the previous books. After finishing the last book I realized that I had definitely had enough of Colonel Brandon and his wife Louisa. I wanted them to go away! Imagine my delight when I looked at the back cover of this book and discovered that Colonel Brandon was the only suspect in the murder of Henry Turner. I did not honestly think that Ms Gardner would give him up to the hangman but it did seem pretty definite that I would get to see him wiggle and squirm for a bit.

Audiobook A Body in Berkeley Square by Ashley Gardner
This is light on the romance and heavy on a murder. The criminal is a surprise. There is continued development of the characters. This is a continued story line but each book can be a stand alone. However starting with the first book and reading the story in sequence you get to know the characters.

Audio A Body in Berkeley Square narrated by James Gillies
Book #5 in the Captain Lacey Regency Mystery series — I am loving this series more and more with each book. I almost didn’t read beyond the first book because I just didn’t like Captain Lacey with his melancholia at every turn, etc. — I’m so glad I continued with the 2nd and subsequent books because the characters grow and become more fleshed out and real with each book.
In this book, Colonel Brandon is accused of and arrested for murder and Captain Lacey seems to be the only one who thinks he’s innocent. Frankly — I haven’t liked Colonel Brandon (or his wife who is supposed to be Lacey’s good friend) and I’d just as soon Lacey let him hang. Lacey, of course, being an honorable man who absolutely cannot leave a mystery alone until he’s unraveled it, has to investigate. Will Lacey save Brandon? If he does, will Brandon prove to be grateful or will he be his normal jackaxx self? You’ll need to read the book to find out. . .
There are several twists and turns — one of which involves a revelation about Grenville. You also get a resolution about where Lacey’s love life is headed. Lots of things going on.

Captain Gabriel Lacey is one of my favourite heroes! This is the fifth full length novel in the series and I enjoyed it just as much as the others. Ashley Gardner writes well, and there are only a few slightly irritating Americanisms (usually ‘gotten’ – is it really necessary?). I am warming to Lady Breckenridge, but it was also nice to be immersed in the little microcosm of Lacey’s life. We meet again Lucius Grenville, Pomeroy (the Bow Street Runner), Bartholomew and Mattias (the footmen), Marianne Simpson (the actress),Colonel Brandon, and his wife Louisa, and even the evil James Dennis. I feel I know them all! The plot was complex and interesting and, as usual, I enjoyed the way Lacey worked out the solution.
