Connolly is a compelling storyteller, but the plot line in this offering can be a bit meandering at times, and he unleashes a blizzard of characters who are essential to the plot but underdeveloped. At times it is difficult to remember which person goes with which name–think Clavell on steroids. It’s clear that Connolly has issues with the American South that are over a half-century out of date, and it’s disappointing to see a foreign author take such a simplistic, arrogant, and lazy approach to addressing race issues in this country. One wonders why he felt the need to weigh in at all. Additionally, when one sees descriptive lines like “…dark as a Republican donor’s motives…”, one sees an author who is happy to insult half of his potential U.S. audience based on their politics, which is hardly wise in a business sense. I’ll read the next book in the series, because so far I have enjoyed them–but if the above issues persist, I’ll be dropping out of this series.

The White Road series Charlie Parker

I absolutely enjoyed this book, but I sure hope Mr Connolly never writes one based in Georgia, cause no one that read it would ever visit here.
The main theme here was apparently racism, which sadly does exist here, but as far as I can tell it exists everywhere, not just in the southern states. This book brings back characters from The Killing Kind, and several new characters. There’s lots of action, numerous killings, and a supernatural element underlying the whole thing.
This also includes a deeper look into Angel’s backstory, which was terribly sad, but very interesting, Angel and Louis being my favorite characters in this series.
Results: I thought there were too many characters in this book, and it seemed as if every southern person was racist. Being from Georgia myself, I found that rather insulting. Aside from that, it was very interesting and enjoyable. If you like the other books you’ll like this one too. (Charleston is a lovely city, by the way, at least in my opinion.

Audiobook The White Road by John Connolly

Two things: First the meat of the story, usually pretty good, is being replaced with more and more mysticism, which too much of the reading pleasure away from the reader. When a story line is heading one direction and basically it is completely changed, not because of good writing or story twists, but because some ghost shows up, I find disconcerting. This is not so much a negative as it might seem, this is just not the type of story I like.

The second thing, which is really starting to piss me off, is the gratuitous sniping at Republicans. Once or twice in the first few books [I have read the first 3.5 before I quit]. For no story reason at all Connolly compares a characters memory and forgetfulness to Ronald Reagan, who got Alzheimer’s, a pretty cheap shot. At the point I quit reading the current book, Connolly compared a character’s motives to “as dark as the motives of a Republican donor”. What started out in the first book as one or two shots is now picking up in frequency. These shots have no story line basis and appear to be just thrown in for his own reasons.

I read books for enjoyment and escapism and not to be lectured politically….especially for someone born and raised in Ireland. Maybe he can start throwing in anecdotes about the Catholics and Protestants all bombing the crap our of each other.

Audio The White Road narrated by Jeff Harding

I bought the entire Charlie Parker series on a whim, and I have to say it will be a chore to read them all. John Connolly seems to like writing about gruesome or sadistic murders (in the first one in the series his wife is skinned alive, yuck!), which would probably interest a shrink. Also, there are so many different names in each story and so much jumping back and forth between locations and timeframes, that you almost need an index to keep track of them all. Not the best bedtime read if you want to avoid nightmares!

Other than that, I think he is a good writer and I do like his occasional attempts at humor, which lighten the mood somewhat.

Still dark but this book seemed rushed to conclude compared to the others. I didn’t understand the need to bring Faulkner back from the previous book into this one, for me this element was more of a distraction than anything, if anything it should have been resolved at the beginning of the book not the end. Also it was a little to stereotyped for my tastes. Still a good book.
