I absolutely love this series. I am re-reading and find myself amazed that the writing, character development, story, etc. all keep getting better and better. While the material can be somewhat dark at times, it is impossible to put these books down. Don’t ask me which book is my favorite. I love them all. The author has created a world all its own.

I just finished The Lovers and I can’t figure out why it took me so long to reread these. I have both hard copy and kindle versions of all the books. Love John and Charlie (and all of Charlie’s loyal friends).

The Lovers series Charlie Parker

It’s been a while since I read a Charlie Parker novel – The Reapers being the last one, and that’s at least a year or more ago – but it didn’t take long to be swept back into his world. This book was particularly interesting in that it covered Charlie’s own back story and the death of his father. Of course there was the usual paranormal/supernatural element – the overlay of an ‘evil’ that is always there in Charlie’s world. Connolly’s writing style imbues his descriptions of places and people with a real sense of being and of knowing. This is not a ‘happy ever after’ read – it goes to some very dark places. However, for those of us who have read all this series from the beginning, those dark places are expected and the books would seem strange (stranger?) without them.

Audiobook The Lovers by John Connolly

I have been a John Connolly fan for the last 5 years. My first book of his was THE BLACK ANGEL, which quickly became my favorite book I ever read. Then he came out with THE UNQUIET and that one edged out THE BLACK ANGEL as my favorite book ever. So when I sat down to read THE LOVERS I wondered if that was going to be the new #1. I must say that it is not, but that doesnt mean it wasn’t a great book because I am telling you now…THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!

For those who are new to John Connolly, I can confidently say you could read this without reading the previous Charlie Parker books, but it will make you want to go back and read those earlier novels. John Connolly doesn’t give anything away to those earlier novels, but this one might be a little more rich to you the reader if you have read the earlier books. If you haven’t you can still enjoy this one from cover to cover.

I won’t go into what THE LOVERS is about as you can read that here, but know this, Charlie Parker’s world is a very dark one. There are sinister forces at work that want him dead. In the previous books there was a fine line that ran through the novels that touched on the supernatural. In THE LOVERS, the supernatural aspect seems a bit more vivid and prevalent.

John Connolly pulls no punches in his delivery of a story. You can tell when you are reading that he lets the characters and story breathe on their own. Nothing feels forced or cliche. When you read THE LOVERS you feel as if you could go to Maine and go the bar where Charlie works and see him serving up a beer, talking with Louis and Angel. You might even see the Fulci brothers guarding the door.

Yes, it is that real. It is that authentic. THE LOVERS is a wonderful hard-boiled novel that would make any reader proud. If Thomas Harris and Stephen King were to collaborate on a novel, THE LOVERS and other Charlie Parker novels would be their creation. I hope you get a chance to read this book. You will not be disappointed. Make sure you have a lot of time on your hands because you will NOT want to put this down. I can assure you of that. Thanks again Mr. Connolly for another time well spent with Charlie Parker!

Audio The Lovers narrated by Jeff Harding

Again, John Connolly has created a book that will hold your attention and answer a lot of questions about Charlie Parker’s background, particularly his father’s suicide. Parker, without a PI license finds himself tending bar at the Great Lost Bear in Maine when he decides to investigate his past. The trip back in time creates Connolly’s usual dark and convoluted meanderings with lots of dark, disturbing and brutal images. As usual he collides the metaphysical with the tangible present which creates the roller coaster ride we have come to expect from a Charlie Parker novel.

While its nice to know the background on Charlie and his birthright will surprise you, I did not give this my usual 5 stars. Yes, it was tantalizing, yes, it started out with a BANG, yes, it was intense; yes it was haunting and lyrical; but I felt that the ending was somehow rushed and I felt a bit incomplete and hungry when I completed the novel. I read this over a year ago, so I’m trying to pull out the images I had as I read it.

It was written in the usual beautiful prose that is so characteristic of Connolly. It was intense. It was powerful. But there was something missing in the end that is hard to discribe other than to say it ended too abruptly to be satisfying.

If you haven’t read this series of books you have missed out. The characters in this books are very well written and can make you shake with laughter.
I recently gave one of the books to a friend to read who promptly bout all the others in the series. My mum buys the newest book for me every Christmas and I start reading it on Christmas Day.
The books follow the same characters which is something that I like in books. You don’t have to start at the beginning of the series but it is nice to. Highly recommend and you won’t be disappointed.

    1. amazing, gripping series churned out by John who always describes various aspects of human nature within each character down to the most relatable level- always careful to keep writing from the perspective of the character in focus when required. the narration by Jeff is always perfect, with such carefully crafted and studied mimicry of accents for the range of characters that they seem to jump from the screen.
