When Division Commander Alastair Gilbert is savagely murdered in the kitchen of his rural home, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma Jones are sent to investigate the crime. They find that there is no shortage of suspects, as the victim was a cruel, cold and vindictive man, and soon they are embroiled in the many petty emotions and complicated relationships among the villagers. At the same time, the two must come to terms with their own relationship and how to move forward…. I enjoyed the village aspect of this novel in particular, probably because relationships in small English villages are always entertaining to read about, at least in fictional form! The previous book in this series ended with the relationship between Duncan and Gemma changing, about which the two of them have very different perspectives, and a large part of this novel deals with the aftermath of that situation. As a result, you have both a crime to solve (which I did, shortly before the reveal at the end) and a relationship with which to agree or disagree, making for a satisfying read. Although Ms. Crombie’s writing is not top-of-the-line in terms of mystery writers, it’s quite serviceable and I will continue reading this series, at least for the time being. Mildly recommended.

Mourn Not Your Dead audiobook in series Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James Mystery Novels
MOURN NOT YOUR DEAD by Deborah Crombie is Book 4 of her Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James crime series.
A very powerful police administrator, Alastair Gilbert, is found dead in his kitchen in a suburban area of London.
Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James are called in to assist the local police efforts.
It is a small town and full of secrets and overlapping relationships. No one seems eager to talk about the Gilbert Family, and a string of petty thefts that have been taking place in the village.
I liked this title very much. It is very detailed – the plot, the characters, their relationships, their interactions with other police units. The detecting and police procedural part of the series is much more detailed and an integral part of the story. Duncan and Gemma wok with other police officers and detectives and are in and out of London to Holmbury St. Mary often. The sense of place is very real.

Audiobook Mourn Not Your Dead by Deborah Crombie
One of my guilty pleasures is reading mysteries. I particularly like those in a series as the main character(s) return for each installment and I enjoy watching their stories develop. Having a focus on characters and location, in addition to the mystery, also keep things interesting. These books by Deborah Crombie are what “cozy” mysteries were before the genre was taken over by the schlocky and formulaic books so often published currently. They offer fun, enjoyable reads without a lot of blood or violence and yet aren’t total fluff either.
In this installment, everything you need for a good read is here: characters which are likeable but complex, a setting that lends itself to the reader getting comfy (think reading chair with a hot or cold drink easily at hand), and a mystery that keeps you reading to find out “who-dun-it”. After four books, I have come to depend on Ms. Crombie to provide a purely entertaining read without blood or gore and one which will encourage me to continue on to the next book once this is finished. She delivered on this one and I have already downloaded Dreaming of the Bones . My only real complaint relates to one of the mysteries not being solved (or acknowledged it wasn’t) by the end of the book. Hopefully, that little hanging tidbit will get resolved next time out.

Audio Mourn Not Your Dead narrated by Michael Deehy
I like this series and I like the characters. I am interested in how they work out their relationship as partners on the force and lovers.
My problem is that this book left open ended questions and I have not determined without reading the next book, if these questions are answered.
Who killed Jackie? And what is the story with Trolly? My memory has been affected by long term Covid, but it seems to me that there were some unanswered questions between the first and second book as well.
Just my take on the book, otherwise I think it is definitely a good series.

I began reading the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books in the middle of the series – Water Like a Stone – and was hooked but, to be honest, I wouldn’t have read all Deborah Crombie’s 18 in the series had I started at the first which Is good but not as rounded as the later novels and I held off commenting on any until completed the marathon. Firstly, I can say, without fear or favour, that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the mysteries. They are all whodunnits but centred around an expanding group of families and friends. While each book covers a separate mystery and murder(s) there is the recurrent theme of the family that runs through all the stories – and often murders come to Duncan and Gemma – separately and together. Because of the titles there is no need for a spoiler alert to the readers of the first book to know that Duncan and Gemma become an item and then a family – not as quickly as one might think. Having read a number of books that have been turned into TV series I’m surprised that no-one has attempted to turn what I believe to be one of the finest of the genre – I have not come across another series that so economically but finely draws its main characters. However, I notice that many of the current TV series have relatively few central characters and that perhaps the increasing cast of friends and family (despite losing a few on the way) might put producers off.
