Last time Crombie fans met with Scotland Yard’s Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his wife Detective Inspector Gemma James in “The Sound of Broken Glass,” they solved two virtually identical dead-in-their beds murders of men who apparently had only two things in common: Each was a lawyer and each had once lived in Prince Albert’s “Crystal Palace” neighborhood. Case closed, Duncan returned to his office where he found a sealed envelope on his desk. Book ends before he opens it.
Now the envelope is open, an infuriated Duncan has been booted out of Scotland Yard for reasons unknown and sent to Holborn Police Station to run a major-incident team. His first case there is a doozy. A group of protesters has decided to picket St. Pancras train station, while one of their number gets them added attention by tossing a smoke bomb. As it happens, Gemma’s sidekick, Melody, (who you may remember fell in love with Andy, the guitar player we met in the last book) has come to the station to hear Andy’s duo play there, arriving just in time to see that what’s tossed is not a smoke bomb, it’s a phosphorus grenade that sets on fire the man who set it off, but wasn’t the man who was supposed to have set it off. Dead man down, the protesters run for their lives. Kinkaid and his team are on the way. Meanwhile, Gemma and her South London murder squad colleagues are investigating the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl.
This is the 16th in the series. Since these books dwell quite a lot on the Duncan and Gemma story (lots of home life, kids and baby kittens in this one),I recommend reading them in order, as best you can. Here’s the list, from the beginning: A Share in Death…All Shall be Well…Leave the Grave Green… Mourn Not Your Dead…Dreaming of the Bones…Kissed a Sad Goodbye…A Finer End… And Justice There Is None…Now May You Weep…In a Dark House…Water Like a Stone…Where Memories Lie…Necessary as Blood…No Mark Upon Her…The Sound of Broken Glass…To Dwell in Darkness.

To Dwell in Darkness audiobook in series Duncan Kincaid / Gemma James Mystery Novels
Deborah Crombie made a huge mistake when sending Duncan and Gemma to separate divisions. There are so many story lines going on that all of them lack. If you are going to write in new characters, then some old ones (no matter how much we love them) need to be let go. Within the format she established in her prior novels, it is impossible to explore and solve the cases for both of these detectives satisfactorily. As with other loyal fans, I could not wait for her newest to come out. I was disappointed when The Sound of Broken Glass ended abruptly and could not believe it when this ended in a cliffhanger. While there are character story lines that continue in the subsequent novels of many authors, each and every novel should be complete in itself. She used to be on of my favorite authors but I am not purchasing any more from her; I am not even sure I want to spend time reading a library copy, either.

Audiobook To Dwell in Darkness by Deborah Crombie
I absolutely loved this book, so sad I am coming to the last of them :-((( I just fall into their life, that’s what her writing does to me..and I love going to google to find out about the Pancreas station and all it’s history!! The writing is so sweet and tender in her descriptions of Duncan and Emma’s family life..love the whole kitten line.. and as always the detective work leads me along, never really knowing what is coming up..isn’t that the definition of a great story??? The underpinnings of something going on with the relocation of Duncan, the promotion of Gemma, allows me to know it will be continued on the next book, that’s OK with me!! I just feel extremely satisfied reading along with their daily life., in fact it feels like a treat to get my chores done so I can get back to this story. I just hope when this series ends I can find another author who has a number of books that I can get into.

Audio To Dwell in Darkness narrated by Michael Deehy
As a fan of series books, I am aware how tricky it can be to keep a story fresh while moving along in so many books. I usually make allowances and keep reading knowing that my favorite authors will deliver. No need to bear with Ms Crombie. Just keeping up with her is the challenge.
From her first introduction to Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid, the mysteries have had twists and turns worthy of praise but the addition of historical citations, poetry, musical interludes and cultural diversity add depth and richness to each book. But the one quality that binds me to the series are the characters and the way in which this author allows them to grow with each story line. There are a repeatIng and an interlacing cast of characters which provide continuity and seem old friends, but they are not stagnant or two dimensional. No siree. They age. They learn. And they charm.
‘To Dwell in Darkness’ is as interesting in its plot line as it is in its psychological revelations. It grabbed me in and didn’t let me go until I listened (thank you for the audiobook!)
until the last chilling note of music faded. I will be busy listening again soon too!

I began reading the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James books in the middle of the series – Water Like a Stone – and was hooked but, to be honest, I wouldn’t have read all Deborah Crombie’s 18 in the series had I started at the first which Is good but not as rounded as the later novels and I held off commenting on any until completed the marathon. Firstly, I can say, without fear or favour, that I thoroughly enjoyed all of the mysteries. They are all whodunnits but centred around an expanding group of families and friends. While each book covers a separate mystery and murder(s) there is the recurrent theme of the family that runs through all the stories – and often murders come to Duncan and Gemma – separately and together. Because of the titles there is no need for a spoiler alert to the readers of the first book to know that Duncan and Gemma become an item and then a family – not as quickly as one might think. Having read a number of books that have been turned into TV series I’m surprised that no-one has attempted to turn what I believe to be one of the finest of the genre – I have not come across another series that so economically but finely draws its main characters. However, I notice that many of the current TV series have relatively few central characters and that perhaps the increasing cast of friends and family (despite losing a few on the way) might put producers off.
