After the bitter and unhappy ending of Uniform Justice, I find I am unable to bring myself to read another of her books. It seems that Donna Leon has lost her taste for a good ending. While I enjoy her writing immensely, the last few books I’ve read end badly, and leave me with a sour taste. The sad conclusion of Uniform Justice was unnecessary and was inconsistent with the facts. Usually I see this happen where an author forces a happy-but-not-credible ending.

Audiobook Uniform Justice by Donna Leonm
I’ve been reading Donna Leon’s Brunetti books in the series order and have just finished nr 12. Uniform Justice. What a strange title. Highly misleading. I enjoy these books and will probably keep in reading. But one thing has by now become predictable. There is no uniform justice. Not in this book or most of the books that preceded it. The rich and the powerful do not have face the consequences, at least not directly. In one of the earlier books one criminal’s son got killed so there was that. But the son was a criminal, murderer, so not sure it really counts as justice. In this book, all criminals, big and wannabes, avoid justice. I hope this aspect of the Brunetti books changes going forward. Predictable conclusions spoil the feeling of enjoyment.
I enjoy Donna Leon’s Guido Brunetti series in large part because of the setting in Venice. Commissario Brunetti is an extremely sympathetic character who is far from perfect but is a good and decent man. In this story, as in life, things get complicated and answers are not completely satisfactory. This is an entertaining read if you can be content with imperfect justice.

Audio Uniform Justice narrated by David Colacci
A young man was murdered in a famous military academy in Venice. The case lands on Inspector Brunetti’s desk.
Inspector Brunetti is a native of Venice, who appreciates the beauty of his city, is a lover of good Italian food, and is always in pursuit of Justice.
In this book, as in other Inspector Brunette books, a detailed description is given of workings of the police and Italian politics.
But this particular book gave me the impression that the whole structure of the police is based on corruption, conspiracy and bias. Most of the characters are described as corrupt, incompetent, or strictly career oriented. Except for Inspector Brunetti and one or two of his officers, the rest seem to be useless. At one point I was wondering – what is the point in having the police at all.
To solve a crime, especially committed by scions of Venetian society or high ranking military, the superior must be manipulated or outright ignored.
Therefore the conclusion was inevitable – inspector Brunetti did solve the case, but the criminal would never be brought to justice.
It is my second attempt at reading this particular book. The first time I put it aside after reading only few chapters. After reading few of her other books and liking them, I purchased this ebook on sale with an option to add professional narration.
Well, my first instinct was the right one – I did not enjoy this book. However, this time, I listened to the end.
