This book deserves a wider male readership. After reading it, I also began following Jack Donovan on YouTube, and I must say, I highly recommend it. In fact, I plan on revisiting the book several more times myself.

“The Way of Men” is a book that aims to explore the essence of what makes a man proficient in his masculinity, distinct from other interpretations like religious aspects. Jack Donovan, the author, contends that true manhood aligns with the traits of strength, courage, mastery, and honor, which he considers the four cardinal virtues of being proficient in “being a man.” The book was partly written as a response to the emergence of manhood books in the 1990s, promoting an idea of the “90s male” who was expected to prioritize women’s needs.

In some ways, the book can be seen as a spiritual reflection influenced by the movie “Fight Club,” where discontented suburbanites with high intellect sought enlightenment by rebelling against their safe, consumerist lifestyles through physical combat. Like “Fight Club,” this book also presents a cry against the soul-crushing emptiness of the modern world. Many young men today yearn for something more profound amidst the safety and regulations of contemporary society—searching for meaning through valorous struggles.

The book serves as a primer on fundamental manhood, particularly directed at younger men raised in orderly societies. It focuses on the principles of warfare in hunter-gatherer tribes, which holds a certain allure when faced with the burdens of modern civilization.

However, this reviewer finds the book lacking in spiritual substance and neglecting the necessity for men to function within a civilized framework. The reviewer’s own experiences, including combat in Iraq, demonstrate that returning to a gang-like mentality and fighting is not a path to enlightenment. While the book compellingly simplifies the essentials of manhood, the reviewer believes that civilization remains a permanent aspect of human existence, and the ability to navigate it as a man is equally vital. The four virtues of Freemasonry—Temperance, Prudence, Fortitude, and Justice—offer an alternate, more nuanced perspective on being proficient in “being a man.”

For someone who has been through extensive combat experiences, the ideas in the book may feel somewhat simplistic, despite their eloquent presentation and deliberate reduction for effect. The book seems to demand a more comprehensive exploration, spanning multiple volumes. Donovan should consider addressing how to sustain proficiency in manhood as one grows older and navigates the intricacies of civilization, while still dealing with serious matters in a composed, reasonable manner.

In conclusion, “The Way of Men” offers valuable insights, but for those with extensive combat experience, the ideas may appear somewhat one-dimensional. The book deserves expansion and consideration of how to maintain manhood proficiency in the complexities of modern life, beyond the primitive frontiers.

Audio The Way of Men narrated by Jack Donovan

This book will undoubtedly face significant challenges in today’s society, particularly in Germany, as it delves into two topics burdened by the constraints of political correctness:

  1. Masculinity: its origins, development, and defining characteristics.
  2. The state of masculinity in contemporary “Western” society.

It becomes evident that this work is more of a passionate manifesto than a scientifically grounded piece from a young doctoral candidate. Is this a drawback? Not in my opinion. The author assumes that enough research has been conducted on biochemical processes, hormones, and human (and male) evolution. Nevertheless, radical feminists, gender mainstreamers, rainbow fanatics, and those who lament “heteronormativity” will undoubtedly detest this book, dismissing it as a form of extreme social Darwinist sexism.

And this is precisely why it can only be a polemic, as gender-specific “standards” are defamed as “social constructs,” making it challenging for the scientific community to explore the supposedly constructed gender of men while battling marginalization.

In the reviewer’s opinion, the author’s polemic is somewhat restrained. While there are occasional jabs at the Western rainbow lifestyle and feminism, overall, it remains within reason. However, the core theses (“Us vs. Them,” “Courage/Risk”) will undoubtedly stir controversy in a country like Germany, where the prevailing sentiment is to construct an all-encompassing “we” at any cost (integration policies, sensitivity in schools for “nonconventional lifestyles,” quotas, replacing Christmas with “year-end festival” to avoid excluding Muslim citizens, the infamous Twitter #MeToo debate, etc.).

Ultimately, I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it convincingly portrays why the male gender is in distress […] and examines the role played by our institutions in this regard.

After reading this book, one (regardless of gender) will realize that being a man is not simple. It becomes apparent that being a man was once highly esteemed, and upon further reflection, readers may recognize that the “tactical virtues” (Virtus->vir->Latin for man->virile) remain relevant even in this tumultuous era. Not the “Neanderthal-style” with a spear in hand and a mammoth underfoot, but figuratively speaking. Taking care of one’s “tribe” (in the metaphorical sense, family, coworkers, neighbors, or friends) with full commitment is as valuable today as it was 2000 years ago. Having loyal friends who will stand by you through thick and thin, even at personal cost, is worth more than gold (“When your life and the lives of people who you care about depend on it, you’ll need the men around you to be as strong as they can be”).

Unfortunately, many people today are largely spared from significant challenges in life. Instead, they hang around, play on their PlayStations, and when faced with difficult situations like a significant move, someone going to jail, or facing a life-threatening illness, their sense of friendship (“Us vs. Them”) becomes distant, and they are willing to dissolve the now seemingly costly friendship.

The reviewer finds resonance with the author’s worldview. The reviewer has spent half a decade caring for a severely ill family member, juggling it alongside work responsibilities. Witnessing the lack of love, cowardice, and indifference in the nursing home, and seeing how other sick, elderly people suffer, highlights how many people today comfortably shape their “tribe.” Woe to those who grow old and sick without having raised sensible offspring… Moreover, the reviewer was alarmed by the stark lack of understanding from their social environment (which was quite young at the time). Young “men” would rather endure the hangover from their all-Saturday coma drinking or complain angrily about having to carry a case of water for their mothers on Sunday, rather than using the time to visit a dying elderly person and pushing their heavy wheelchair up and down the street.

What among these mentioned “attitudes” represents the “tactical virtue,” the masculine mindset? Readers will quickly find the answer after reading the book…

The existence of 566 previous reviews for this 2012 book is a clear testament to its significance. To provide a concise review, I’ll borrow the author’s own words. In a seven-minute overview found in this video: jack-donovan dot com/axis/books/the-way-of-men/, he sheds light on the essence of his work. Watching the video also offers insights into the author’s character. His remarkably masculine presence exudes from the screen, lending immense credibility to his thesis. You can practically sense the sweat and vigor as he speaks.
