Dragonheart: Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern

I refuse to actually finish it. It’s the same damn book as Dragon’s Blood, which I just read 3 books ago…Seriously, same time, same problem, same people.

I’m done, Done, DONE with the Pern author’s habit of rewriting the same story from another point of view and calling it a new book! Todd learned well from his mother…

This is one of those times I regret my impulsive behavior in buying the rest of the books online after reading the first few. Wah Wah Wahhhhh.

We already know what is going on during this book as it is coincident with Dragon’s Blood. I imagine this was supposed to be more like Nerlika’s Story, a different viewpoint of common events. (Something Anne started to do with increasing frequency over the years in her books.)

What we end up with, however, is an often tedious account of how yet another group of dragons has again gone back in time. This time it’s mostly children we watch slowly age…until suddenly we’re propelled forward two years, as if some magic page minimum has been reached and a new book can be started.

This book is a must read for all who want to fill in the gaps in the history and development of Pern, its holds and the establishment of wereholds. Although it may lag in spots, the read invigorates the mind, in how society and commerce on Pern was changed by a few willing to set aside traditions and perceptions to focus on the bigger picture — survival of Pern.

I LOVE the PERN series and have read every book (written by Anne), most of them multiple times. I loved the idea of the story continuing with books by her soon, BUT, as much as I hate to say it, this book was maybe one of the worst written I’ve ever read. I finished it, because I always finish books, but oh boy, was it dreadful. Character development, story line, story flow – all of the things Anne did so well were just all over the place in this book. It’s too bad!

This was great reading I hope there is more to Fionas
Sgtory. I find I hope at some point they go back to Ista. The characters are great the telling of the story was so intriguing. I hope that it’s not the e nd. Sincerely, Nancy Parks
