I enjoyed the book as I like the west, especially Wyoming, hunting and a good police or in this case, a Game Warden story. Not a 5 star novel but an interesting story and likeable characters. A couple of obvious errors I noticed that he should not have made: Winchester never made an AR15 rifle. And, there is no such caliber as a .308 Magnum. If he meant a .308 Norma Magnum, he should have named it correctly. To many people, those not familiar with firearms, these errors would not be noticed. It just sort of spoiled the read for me as I hate to see such obvious errors in print. Also, he writes way too much background on peripheral characters who are not central to the story. It is boring. As a retired cop I would say the “hero” Joe Pickett makes some really stupid decisions. But, this is entertainment, not real life. Anyway it is an easy read and worth the discount price on Amazon. I will likely buy another one and hopefully it’s better than this one.

Review #2

Nowhere to Run audiobook in series Joe Pickett

The Joe Pickett saga continues with a really fine effort from a great story teller.

Nowhere to Run has longer scenes than most of the other books in the series. With some interludes, a couple of long-range wilderness patrols by Wyoming’s most famous game warden cover many of the pages of the novel. Interesting characters abound and the wild men who become the target of Pickett’s searches are fascinating characters. As usual, Box returns to one of his frequent themes – this time governmental over-reach – to tie a ripping good tale into a current issue sharply dividing the country (though with most of the denizens of Wyoming on one side of the issue).

Review #3

Nowhere to Run audiobook by C. J. Box

In this book, Joe Pickett decides to check out some strange happenings in the Sierra Mountains area near Baggs, WY before moving on to his new assignment. He runs into twins who are living off the land and “just want to be left alone” by government employees. Things get ugly really quick. But, Joe survives and as usual, the issue is a lot more complex than it seems. Over time, Joe figures this out with the help of Nate and decides to return at the request of the Governor and the parents of a missing young woman who is with the twins. As usual, the book is full of great descriptions of the land and good character development. Also, the story line is complex and interesting. The ending though is a little sad.

Review #4

Nowhere to Run audio narrated by David Chandler

Joe Pickett, the Game Warden did one final task on the job he had for the last year. There were outlaw twins in the mountains scaring people. When he went to investigate, he is hurt ending up in the hospital. It is a case where the government seized their property in another state to give to a corporation that would bring in a lot of taxes. Three of their family werekilled and they found this place hoping to be left alone. So I’m not sharing more, since that may ruin it for you. The writing is good. The characters have depth and he describes situations and sights so well. I know I’m hooked.

Just put me down for ALL of CJ Box’s books. So very entertaining from beginning to end. I enjoy the ‘pull and push’ between Joe and Nate, both oh so settled in their opinions of right and wrong but both finding that maybe their best friend just might have a good idea or two that provides fodder for thought. And I LOVE that their emotional make-up is so far apart but yet, from the beginning, they remain steadfast friends. And I like very much the many layers to the friendship or the many people involved. Nate is one lucky man in my opinion to have found this family. Or did they find him?
I was surprised in the beginning to have fallen in love with this series because I don’t generally like ‘family’ stories but I sure liked this family.
I highly recommend CJ Box and his Joe Pickett. I’d just love to sit down with him and talk about he crafted this character! Please read this series-you won’t be disappointed.
