The Hammer (1992) First, I should say I used to breed AKC championship, blood lined Toy Poodles, so dogs have a special place with me; additionally I\’m a Viet Nam war Veteran who actually had a job where someone was shooting at me (oh, I had a desk job, also for six months where I was \”safe as a Major General\”) I didn\’t even bother leaving the bar at the Officer\’s Club in Cu Chi during a mortar attack when the bunker was 60 feet away. I think it was a combination of \”No young man believes he shall ever die.\” -William Hazlitt and being a single Wildebeest in the middle of the herd crossing the Mara River. Yes, the crocodiles get some of the herd, but that\’s mostly the ones on the outsides. The odds are with you if you stay in the middle. This book, maybe the entire series should come with a warning: WARNING THIS BOOK IS A \”READ ON VACATION ONLY BOOK\”. IF YOU HAVE TO GO TO WORK TOMMORROW YOU MIGHT RUN THE RISK OF GOING WITHOUT SLEEP. IT IS A PAGE TURNER THAT YOU CAN NOT PUT DOWN. Dave Drake told me that he wrote some of the battle scenes. I don\’t know much about Steve Stirling, yet, but I do know which battle scenes were written by someone who has been there and done that. Not just someone who has read about it or heard some war stories about war. It is my experience that at least half of all war stories are made up and the other half are exaggerated, to some extinct. Yeah, even some of mine probably, but not the one about the .51 caliber bullet hole in my steel pot or the wound I received. I was sitting on the steel pot, BTW, Thank Goodness! Last, but not least, I\’m an ex-field artillery officer who called fire mission in Nam on a daily basis. Someone has some training in artillery who wrote the book. They even had a Time on Target (almost/sort of) in one of the battle scenes and used \”airbursts\” that most people don\’t know about outside of the field artillery who shoot them and the Infantry who dodge them. Plus Center acted as the PPS-5 radar (almost/sort of). Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I\’m retired so I don\’t have to get up in the morning. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys realistic combat, but does not suffer from PTSD, it is very realistic. WAR IS NOT PRETTY OR GLORIOUS! Gunner June, 2013

Audiobook The Hammer (The General #2) by David Drake S.M. Stirling

This is an excellent 5 book series. I have read it many times over the last 13 years. If you like Weber\’s \”Mutineers moon\” this is similar with a nice twist.
