Black Sheep (Dirty Mafia Duet #1)

It’s been a while since I read a Meghan March book but I decided to take a chance on Black Sheep because of Cannon Freeman, illegitimate son of Dominic Casso. He was was first seen in the Dirty Billionaire trilogy and I really liked his character so I decided to take a chance. I don’t know if it’s because she over sells the “epicness” of her books or what, but I was left feeling disappointed. This is a “mafia” romance, I would expect it to be edgy at the very least, nevermind that it was supposed to be the darkest, most twisty book she’s written. It wasn’t. Cannon’s love interest, Drew, is an investigative journalist who is undercover to bring down the Casso crime family. I found that really hard to believe. The side characters didn’t even really bring anything to the table, they just seemed to be added filler for more words, especially Teal. This being a duet it of course ended with a “cliffhanger “, a very predictable, boring cliffhanger. This book, IMO, is not worth the $4.99 and I really don’t see myself spending another $4.99 to find out what happens, I’m just not invested in this story at all.

I’m really bumped out over this book. I couldn’t wait for it to come out and when it finally did – I wish I didn’t purchase it. I usually devour Meghan’s stories but not this one. I feel it was rushed, not flowy, not enough build up, like she didn’t think it through and Cannon’s character doesn’t strike me as a real alpha mobster. I was actually skipping pages and saying “blah”. What happened?? I usually can’t put her books down. The last 25% of the book picked up a bit so I was like – ok maybe it’s getting better and then crash and boom it ends with – yes you guessed it – a cliffhanger….Devil series was so much better!!! I wanna cry. Definitely won’t be buying the second book.

The Quick and Dirty: Investigative journalist infiltrates mob family as a waitress at a high-end club in order to find out if they had a hand in her father’s death, only to fall for her boss… who also happens to be a mob prince.

Repeat after me: Meghan March always delivers. While you may want to chuck your e-reader at the end of the book, know that this will all be resolved within White Knight. Yes, the queen of cliffhangers has done it again! While I would consider Black Sheep more of a mob-lite book (less violence/illegal activity, more power moves) it was intense, suspenseful and HOT HOT HOT! Cannon is a true signature Meghan March hero. He’s in a position of power, possessive, and that bad boy alpha male we all swoon over. Drew has balls of steel and I loved the mental and emotional struggle that she faces as she tries to manage her secret identity and her feelings for Cannon. I also loved that we’re meeting Cannon again (remember him from Creighton Karas’ story?). This is the end-of-the-summer page-turner you do not want to miss!

Even with that Cliffy, Im over hear all kinds of puppy dog, stupid swoony grin and twitterpated heart because I FINALLY got Cannon!!!

Or at least part of Cannon, since this is a duet, but you understand.

I have been waiting since the before Dirty Billionaire trilogy was completed to know about Cannon because I knew he had to be just as awesome as Crey Crey to be his bff and I was proven right! He is so much more than the sum of his parts, and some of those parts are quite wonderful and I ended up adoring him. And then there is Drew. This woman has b$%#S of steel, let me tell you, and I adored her. She sticks to her convictions, but isnt one to go into a situation blindly, nor is she one to take things at face value…most of the time. She just has that thing that makes me want to grab a couple of fingers of bourbon and get to know her better.

As for their journey thus far…HAWT (was that ever in doubt???) but also sweet and swoon worthy. The chemistry between them is intense and, despite what brought them together, I loved how well they flowed together and cannot wait to see what else theyll have to face before getting the HEA they so richly deserve.

Now, Im typically making grabby hands at the next book in either a Meghan March duet or trilogy, and believe me when I say that I am, but I am in a bit of a conundrum…do I wait to read the words that are in White Knight OR do I listen to them?? I do have the audio book for the duet ~ I am a #fangirl after all ~ but I waffled over diving in to them first or wait for the book because sometimes I prefer reading first and then listening to the words since I dont have to worry too much about paying attention…I still havent made up my mind on what I will do, but at least I have the option open to me *BSEG*

But as for the storyline and all the characters that populate the Dirty Mafia world…I honestly love the path that has been laid out for Cannon and Drew and cannot wait to see how things play out after that very…interesting ending. And as for the secondary characters…well, I love hearing about some of my favs from other books ~ one was definitely accompanied by a bit of happy dancing ~ but Dom Casso is the one that intrigues me the most because part of me wants to not like him, but I cannot help but be fascinated by the man and Im definitely looking forward to seeing what he does, or doesnt do, in the next book!

Drew one top girl, is desperate to get a job at top ten Cannons club. Her friend feeds her a lot of stories about this guy. He doesnt get involved with the people he employs. He does do relationships and he is the bastard son of Dom Casso a lethal Mafia Boss. Only one fact is true. Drew is not whom she seems either. Out to find who killed her Dad and take them down, via evidence that will give a solid case of guilt. The drama is knife edge. Cannon is dreadfully desirable. Drew is one either brave lady or an idiot. Dom is intimidating, over powering and sinister. Also patronising and demeaning towards Cannon. Great to acknowledge previous characters, who indirectly have influenced Cannons predicament. One heck of a cliffhanger. Great romance, wonderfully written and yes I want more.
