I am absolutely delighted by the release of ‘The Chronicles of Amber’ on Kindle. Few things bring more satisfaction than witnessing the culmination of a long-anticipated event.

However, as is the case with all Kindle conversions, it’s wise to approach with a touch of caution. Typos tend to surface, and I’m referring to a significant number of them. Even worse, I’ve encountered Kindle conversions that omit portions of stories or become so convoluted that understanding them becomes a challenge.

Thankfully, this is not the situation here. I’ve perused this new edition and have only stumbled upon three typos. These have been duly communicated to the publisher and, as of October 31, 2015, have been rectified. This stands as an exceptional Kindle conversion. The publisher has also diligently worked on addressing typos in book 1, ‘Nine Princes in Amber’ – a publisher truly deserving of support.

Furthermore, I must express my fondness for the Kindle edition’s cover art by Gary McCluskey. The contrast of Corwin donning armor with a battle rifle (BAR?) resting on his shoulder is simply marvelous. And do I spot the Valley of Garnath and the Black Road in the backdrop? Not to mention the silver rose on the left breast. This imagery captures Corwin’s essence and numerous pivotal elements for me. Commendable work.

Speaking of the narrative, it’s of Grade A+ caliber. We rejoin Corwin directly following the events of ‘Nine Princes in Amber’. He’s still recovering from his ordeal but has already formulated the beginnings of a plan. His journey through Shadow leads him to a realm called Lorraine, where he encounters familiar faces from the past and recuperates physically.

After masterfully resolving what appear to be local issues, Corwin presses on to a shadow of the fallen realm of Avalon (a shadow of a shadow, the complexities are mind-boggling). Here, he encounters a brother – a scenario that, for an Amberite, equates to imminent trouble.

Summaries aside, it’s clear that Corwin’s quest for the Amber throne is far from over. He meticulously constructs his plan and marshals his forces this time around, and the outcomes… Well, that’s something I won’t divulge. Along the way, he stumbles upon perplexing hints concerning a somber, deeply personal enigma that seems intertwined with the destiny of Amber itself. More on this matter unfolds in books 3 to 5 – consider that a hint.

This novel encompasses some of my most cherished elements from the entire series: the introduction of Benedict, the exhilarating hellride and the traverse of the Black Road, an arduous day of diamond mining, Corwin’s somewhat problematic ‘acquaintance’ Ganelon, and, naturally, Dara.

In ‘The Guns of Avalon,’ Roger Zelazny truly exhibits his mastery as a craftsman, reaching the pinnacle of his artistry. Clues and red herrings are strewn about like bird droppings on sand, necessitating nothing more than a rake and a sieve for discernment. The plot is engrossing, the prose is succinct, and the dialogue is sharp enough to draw blood if approached carelessly.

The Guns of Avalon audiobook Series Chronicles of Amber

While not achieving the same level as the initial installment, it remains engaging and enjoyable. The final few pages build to a satisfying crescendo, accompanied by intriguing twists that kindle a strong desire to delve into the forthcoming book.

Audiobook The Guns of Avalon by Roger Zelazny

Continuing seamlessly from the events of “Nine Princes in Amber,” this book follows Corwin’s intricate scheme to return to Amber and seize the throne. Unlike its predecessor, which initially unfolds on “our” Earth (essentially a mere shadow of the true realm, Amber), this installment adopts a more straightforward high fantasy sword and sorcery ambiance. The ingenious foundation of Corwin’s strategies centers on the divergence of chemical laws in Amber and its myriad shadows, an element he exploits to his advantage—albeit a somewhat fanciful plot device.

As the broader narrative unfurls, we gradually apprehend the full extent of Corwin’s curse, a foreshadowed revelation from the previous book. The writing remains sharp and incisive, although this time Corwin’s role as narrator adopts a slightly more playful tone, with additional asides directed toward the audience, akin to “I unsheathed my blade, known as Grayswandir. Perhaps in time, I’ll recount how it became mine, but now is not that moment.”

The intricacies of fraternal dynamics take a back seat in this iteration, with fewer convoluted political machinations and uncertainties regarding shifting ambitions and alliances among the brothers. On the whole, I found it enjoyable, although perhaps not to the same extent as “Nine Princes.”

Audio The Guns of Avalon narrated by Alessandro Juliani

Approximately three decades ago, I delved into the pages of this book. A decade prior, I encountered a near-fatal car accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. Recollections suggest that I regarded the book favorably. Now, after completing my sixth journey through the realms of “The Lord of the Rings,” I sought a fresh read. Zelazny’s name sprung to mind, and thus, here I find myself. The narrative had slipped from my memory entirely, rendering it akin to embarking on a virgin reading. I’m content to have retained this recollection.

I embarked on a re-reading journey of the Amber series as a sort of experiment, aiming to determine whether these books would resonate with me as profoundly as they did when I was a young boy. I’m delighted to report that they have more than stood the test of time, continuing to captivate me. My sole disappointment is the puzzling absence of a Kindle edition beyond the third book (although the superb audible versions are available and greatly enjoyed, having a Kindle option would have been a welcomed addition).

While numerous assert that literature held more merit in the past, I hold a differing view. Contemporary authors have crafted remarkable contributions to the genre, and I’m not inclined to regress to a bygone era when only a select few engaged with fantasy literature or role-playing games. However, I must affirm that these books, then and now, surpass much of the fantasy literature available. Perhaps it’s the richness of the prose, or the subtleties of humor that eluded me in my youth, but these texts possess a potency and quality that leaves a lasting impact. Without reservation, I can assure you that delving into these books will be a rewarding and powerful experience.
