I’ve read all the Andy Carpenter novels and liked them all — even though I don’t have a dog and don’t want one. I find Andy’s wise-guy, put-down sense of humor unfailingly amusing.

In this one Andy takes on a client with truly bleak prospects. Brian Atkins, in prison for embezzlement, uses a dog to help him escape. The dog is part of a compassionate prison program involving inmates in training dogs. On the day Brian escapes, he’s seen fleeing the scene of a double murder. Why Andy takes the case, and how he conducts it, is an absorbing story — one that involves mob hits, drugs, gambling, blackmail, cyber crime, and more than one close call for Andy.

Andy’s team is as much fun as ever — Hike, the lugubrious lawyer who assists him; the taciturn Marcus who neutralizes bad guys with mind-boggling efficiency; his ex-cop wife Laurie, who’s a fast draw and provides added protection for timorous Andy; and his accountant Sam, an amazingly gifted hacker. Oh, and there’s his secretary Edna, who never comes to work. She’s the only one I’m getting tired of.

As usual with these books, I really enjoy Andy’s cross-examinations of the prosecution’s witnesses. He is wonderfully manipulative, combining ridicule with menacing logic. And as usual, Andy is still investigating up to the last minute, while the trial is on. This keeps things tense. But not too tense for enjoyment. There’s always a sense that the evildoers will come to grief, and Andy will triumph. I like this.

Outfoxed audiobook in series Carpenter Series

David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter series is one of my favorites, and this book is one of my favorites of favorites. Carpenter jokes and agonizes his way through the plot, which centers on his defense of an escaped convict charged with a double murder. All of Rosenfelt’s familiar series characters show up in one degree or another, including Carpenter’s wife Laura; Marcus the invincible and scary strong man; Willie, Carpenter’s former client and partner in a dog rescue nonprofit; Pete, friend and homicide detective; Sam, the computer genius; and Tara, Carpenter’s beloved dog. Hide, Edna, Vince, and Ricky also make appearances. Rosenfelt provides enough back story information on the characters so that it isn’t necessary for you to have read the previous entries in the series, although you are missing some great reads if you haven’t. The book is written with a wonderful sense of humor and the solution to the murders is clever and not immediately obvious. My only question is: Okay, Mr. Rosenfelt, when is the next book coming out?

Audiobook Outfoxed by David Rosenfelt

Andy Carpenter is fast becoming one of my favorite characters. When I first read about him, his snarky personality put me off, but I tried some other books, and I “got” him. This is a good novel. I found two problems with it — one, the trial went on too long. It became repetitious. And two, I lived in the Bronx for 62 years, and Mr. Rosenfelt is all wrong about Fordham Road. Maybe his portrayal was true in the 60’s or 70’s, but hasn’t been the way he showed it since then. Really bothered me. But the mystery is good otherwise. And Marcus is hysterical, as usual.

Audio Outfoxed narrated by Grover Gardner

Because Andy Carpenter is a likeable and interesting character, even as the story just begins to unfold, it’s hard to put this book down. Then as the “plot thickens”, you can’t help reading faster and faster. I have enjoyed all of the Andy Carpenter series, this is the 14th I’ve read, and this one has a touching little surprise at the end. Thank you Mr. Rosenfelt! Now on to the next book in the series.

This was quite a read! Andy Carpenter is quite the defense lawyer. Brian Atkins escapes prison to protect his almost ex wife from a mobster. Brian was placed in prison by members of a computer company called Starlight for embezzlement that he denied he did. Brian was a principle owner of Starlight with Gerry Wright and Denise Atkins who were both murdered before Brian could arrive but the police were convinced that Brian had motive for revenge against Gerry Wright and Denise Atkins who were supposedly having an affair. So many people were killed. Find out who really killed Gerry Wright and Denise Atkins. It will keep you at the edge of your seat!

Another book in the Andy Carpenter series. As usual, the narrator Grover Gardner absolutely makes the book a pleasure to listen to. Mr. Gardner “is” Andy Carpenter. Should The author ( David Rosenfelt ) ever change the narrator, I don’t think I could ever enjoy this series again.
That being said, I didn’t find this book to be as good as some of it’s predicessors. It lacked much of the character interaction as in the past. I have either read or listened to all of Mr. Rosenfelt’s books and find this not to be on part with the others. It almost seems as though he is in a hurry to get more books out while sacrificing the story line.
