An Inconvenient Woman

It’s a quick, fast paced novel about three women who come to terms with ugly realities through tragedy and broken dreams. Claire is sick with shame and loss because her teenage daughter drowned after an argument aboard a boat. She believes her ex-husband is evil and is desperate to stop him from marrying another woman. Her accusations against him have led to hospitalization for paranoia but have failed to change her beliefs and she keeps up her harassment of him. Sloan is hired by the ex-husband to derail Claire. As Sloan inserts herself into Claire’s life by pretending to befriend her, she learns some painful truths about her own family and begins to doubt the strategy she has planned to save her client and keep Claire from what might lead to murder.

What a fun book. I loved the characters and the way the story unfolds–you’re never quite sure who to believe. The writing is gorgeous, the suspense is intense, and the worlds you get to see inside are intriguing. It’s also incredibly insightful into the human condition as these characters, with their different points of view, tell the story. It’s a real gem. Please tell me there’s more coming from this author!!

I don’t remember ever having read a book where the writing itself is technically proficient (graceful sentences, vivid descriptions), yet the plot pacing and characters are somehow so cliched, clumsy, trite. Foreshadowing comes early on and feels manipulative. The superficiality of the female characters made me wonder initially whether the author is actually a man — but that seemed unfair, so I amend it to speculate that the author is possibly just someone with only rudimentary experience/relationships with women. That said, it would maybe make for a good movie if the pacing were tweaked and the main characters sympathetically acted.

The story took surprising twists and turns. It must be be difficult to come up with such a unique story and original characters. I never saw what was coming, yet it was very entertaining and kept my interest.

This was quite enjoyable. If you like a good mystery with a few startling twists then, this is it. Sloan and Claire will definitely hold your attention.
