I dont know why some authors think that cold and unlikable equates to strength. People keep telling Everley OShea (Eve, the Marionette) that shes cold, unapproachable, frosty, comes across as thinking shes better than others, etc. I dont know about the attitude, but she definitely comes across as completely self-centered, pushing away any help, without really giving enough reason or internal dialogue that we believe it’s justified. Eve simply comes across as unlikable and uncaring. From ignoring the pleas and offered help from her uncle to how she treats the man who offers to be her husband out of kindness and a desire to protect her he even promises to honor and not to touch her if she doesnt want it she comes across as a bratty witch.
Then theres the weirdness of her heart regulator and its alarm. She tucks it into the nook of her spine then buttons her waistcoat. Is it in front or in back? Later, she smothers the alarm by pressing it with her elbow. Okay, if its tucked into the curve of her spine, how did she get her elbow back there? Or is it on her stomach and shes pressing her elbow into her stomach? Does it move around?
And that pesky alarm is always going off over and over and over and over. No one thinks to check out this weird ringing, and even 25% in, her husband-to-be is clueless. Theres that noise again, he says. What noise? The bell I hear when youre around. Well, gosh, you sure are dense. You heard it in the clock shop LOUDLY, as the girl is carried from the room even, you heard it in the streets, youve heard it so many places including on the ship, youve heard it loud, muffled, and what-have-you-for-a-volume and you still havent figured out where it comes from? That regulator is mentioned forty times in the book. Just get rid of it. Its danged annoying. I dont even hear it and Im annoyed by how often the alarm sounds and how much Eve talks and thinks about it.
And, although Eves ticker cant come in contact with water a great fear of hers it can be embedded in the human body which is over 60% water (more if you ignore the bone mass). Blood, lymph, plasma any of that sound liquid? So a wooden heart (actually, a pocket watch, hopefully explained later) embedded between her ribs is staying nicely dry. And theres room between her ribs for the glass face of the watch to poke through and be seen. Ouch!
Other issues: On the very first page of the book, we find: In the beginning, there was no time, and no man or beast walked the world. Where ocean met the land, an ivory mare was born, her mane crafted from sea-foam and her body from barnacles. She was the Creator, goddess of all conception and supreme ruler of seven worlds. Okay, if she just emerged, is the creator and goddess of all conception, where did the barnacles (living things) that preceded her existence come from? And the elderwood is that an elder tree? With acorns? Maybe that should have been an oak tree?
Or I follow the tang of axle grease into the workshop and sift through drifts of sawdust to the storefront. How deep are these drifts? How does one sift through them? Is this rather like being in a snowstorm and pushing through three-foot-deep snow drifts? Shouldnt they sweep more often if theyre more than just light drifts of sawdust?
Another weirdness a sword is being replated. A strange thing to do to a sword. The same sword is lightweight steel and the gold grip, guard, and pommel are tinged green from neglect. Gold does not turn green from neglect. Brass does. Cheap gold-toned metal might turn your finger green, but a gold grip, steel guard, and pommel whether its steel or covered with leather are not going to turn green.
In addition, Before the Broken Star is written in a staccato unsophisticated first person present. First person present is very difficult to do well, and it misses the mark here. A faster-paced, more forceful narrative would benefit from that style, but here things are rather windy and lackadaisical and made more confusing by the lack of a coherent inner monologue. I could go on, but Ive invested enough time in this review and this book.
Before the Broken Star is a DNF for me. Im over a quarter of the way in and I cant handle Everleys witchy treatment of everyone, the alarm on her danged regulator going off constantly, or the strange word and phrase choices. Its all disconnected and discordant strangeness, and Ill move on to something more enjoyable. Not recommended if you like polished imaginative fantasy with deep characterization and world-building.

I have read a book from this Author before, which I enjoyed more– “The Hundredth Queen”. This YA failed to impress me. Would I be more impressed if I was a YA? Doubtful.
The Heroine in this book was 17 going on 12. She didn’t have much depth, and had zero good personality traits. The supporting characters were more appealing. The slight ‘romance’ was boring. The main mystery (to me, anyway) about how she got her clockwork heart was never properly addressed. The World history was mainly portrayed as stories told as fairy tales, which again, dragged for me.
The main redeeming aspect of this book was that the basic premise was reasonably interesting. The various ‘worlds’ have promise. I did manage to read it through to the ‘end’ (which of course, isn’t). It did get more intriguing during the final action scenes.
I doubt that I’m engaged enough to continue the series. Although I love Fantasy and even Steampunk, this book just didn’t quite get there for me.

Audiobook Before the Broken Star (The Evermore Chronicles #1) by Emily R. King
My goodness I was so excited to find this book I loved the authors other series and when I got to this one I was kind of scared because I havent had the best of luck with books in I think its first person. With the I this and I that. But this one worked out so well. I should have never doubted Kings ability to pull me into a story. This one was no different than her Hundredth Queen series it pulled me in from the very first pages and I could not put it down. I stayed up way later than I should to read and finish this amazing story and I dont regret it at all.
This world that King has created is just amazing and something that I didnt see coming. I know there was another book out a few years ago that dealt with people having clockwork hearts but where that one was slow and bogged down this one was light, easy to read and understand, and so full of amazing steampunkyness that I just cant tell you how much I loved this story.
As a retelling of a gender swap Pinocchio I think the author did an amazing job. I dont know if thats what she was going for but it totally screamed it. I loved how this one unfolded and as I said I couldnt put it down!
The characters in this one were just fantastic!! I loved Everley and how she dealt with the aftermath of losing her family. Her story of avenging her families death reminded me of the Princess Bride with the one guy looking for the 5 fingered man. It really broke my heart with the flash back early with how she lost her family and became the way she is. A lot of flashbacks dont work well but this one did volumes to move the story along as well as to make you truly feel for the what she has gone through. I really love that she didnt know things right out. I liked that through this story she learned to fight etc. It was nice to have a character that had to work for what she wanted and just didnt know at the start of the story. Other characters fill out the story and make it one of the best that I have read this year. One other thing that I would like to mention in this one is that I loved that the story didnt totally focus on the romance between Jamison.
The other thing this book has going for it in the character department are some freaking kick butt women! I could see some novellas with other characters coming out of this one and that would make my little heart happy!!
This rare combo of Mythos, Magic, historical fantasy with a splash of science fiction was just one that I didnt see coming but I should have never doubted. I fell for the characters head first and I can not wait for the next installment!!

Audio Before the Broken Star (The Evermore Chronicles #1) narrated by Lauren Ezzo
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started reading – the usual romance and defeat the baddie I supposed – but I’m so glad I was wrong!
This book took me on a real journey. I didn’t necessarily ‘like’ the main character but over the adventure, I was drawn in by the depth of each character created and the pieces revealed about them little by little creating a clear picture of their motives, strengths and weaknesses.
A definite must-read for anyone who loves fantasy or steam punk.

This book has it all: A strong heroine who has overcome great tragedy and survived, albeit with a clock in place of her heart; a dastardly villain to be defeated; a sweet child to open up that clockwork heart; a love interest (of course) – one that didn’t spring up out of nowhere, but grew slowly through the course of the story; and monsters….!
The characters are all well rounded and lovable/detestable as required. The world building is really good, and draws you in to the world. There was nothing I didn’t like about this book, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one.
