Dahlia is a demon, not just any demon she is Chameleon royalty. Chameleon’s have been living in hiding since the great battle between Michael and Lucifer, they were the race treated as the scape goat for Lucifer’s loss and the demons getting kicked out.Dahlia is a fantastic character just the right combination of kick ass and emotionally vulnerable to be realistic. I dislike female characters that are so over the top in either direction it was great seeing Dahlia develop through the first book and take what she could for herself.
Carver and Cade are my next favorite characters, they’re Dahlia’s twin older brothers, standing up against their mother in whatever ways they can without her going completely off the edge and locking them all in the family home. They are so funny and I can’t see what they’ll do in the next book.
Dhalia’s mother is a piece of work surpassing even Joan Crawford of Mommy Dearest proportions, I do hope we get some answers on what exactly went wrong in that woman’s head in the next book.
In my opinion the next book cannot come fast enough, I have all the questions! The world building was so rich and well done that I had one of those lovely book hangovers when I emerged at the end with no idea what time of day it was. I could not put this book down, when all was said and done it was delivery pizza for my family that night because I was busy reading about Dahlia kicking ass. Fantastic!
I did receive an ARC copy in exchange for a review, I also pre-ordered a copy because this series is worth the dent in my book budget to support.

Audiobook Betrayals & Broken Promises (Masquerade of Myths #1) by Takari Hunter
While the concept is interesting, the execution of it was very poor. The MC is a 200 plus demoness who wants and raves and screams at people to take her seriously and not great her like a child, buy all the while she can’t stand up to her mother or the men in her life. Despite years of verbal abuse from her mother, her loving brothers and father don’t protect her. No one calls that woman out and she gets away with it. It’s not believable that they can love their sister and not try and protect her from their mother at all. They just let it happen. And depicting it like it’s ok for them to act this way is beyond disturbing and disgusting. Honestly, what the f?!?!
The MC still refers to her parents as Daddy and Momma, which is ridiculous given her she. Why she is being depicted like a child is beyond me. I half expected baby talk in those scenes. Let’s also not forget that she’s an incompetent fool, either. She was an assassin of humans, but can’t fight demons because her mother didn’t allow her training? What? How does that even make sense, especially as she’s been living in her own for 95 years!? Surely she could have hired someone to teach her. F-ing unreal.
The whole thing with her promised bonded is sickening and stupid. For one, it’s clearly a cheap plot point because IT MAKES NO SENSE. It doesn’t fit, it’s like an excuse to give her a horrible, abusive mom and an abusive future mate for no freaking reason. Literally none. It added no value and just brought up the whole women should submit crap that is prevalent in nearly every scene in the book. The logic when she accepted she would have to so the bond to protect her father and brothers (yes, those ones who DIDN’T stop the abuse) didn’t add up. It was another forced plot point that was as subtle as an anvil. She’s been a helpless little twit throughout so how is she going to save anyone if she can’t even protect herself. But don’t sorry, Lucifer and his seven will rescue the poor little female like they’ve done in every fight scene.
As for dialogue, there’s a lot of it and it’s all super hamfisted and stilted. The language of the conversations and the topics just left me saying “What?” No one would talk that way; it’s unnatural.
Ultimately, this book’s plot made no sense and felt very forced. The MC was an idiot who couldn’t even try to help herself, the other characters unlikable, and everything was depicted in such a way that it left me feeling dirty from all the sexist remarks and portrayals. I would not recommend
