Explaining the structure and function of the human body can be difficult because of its complexity. But Meals is able to find the essential threads of the story of bones and explain them simply and clearly. Even though I know quite a bit about bones already, I found his explanation of the basics to be interesting and entertaining, nonetheless. There are many new things I learned, as well as interesting new ways to think about those things I of which I already had some awareness. If you have any interest in biology or the human body, this book should be on your reading list!

It’s rare to find a book that combines factual knowledge with graceful writing on a subject that too often is given short shrift in today’s medical climate. But Roy Meals has managed to do both about bones from the very first page. Truth to tell, I never appreciated their importance. The author’s ability to engage readers puts him in a league with Jerome Groopman. Don’t miss this book.

Audiobook Bones: Inside and Out by Roy A. Meals MD
Short, easy to read, and entertaining. Lots of interesting facts about how bones work, how they can be fixed, and the role they play in our culture and our history. One of those odd, quirky little books that you run across from time to time that teaches you more than you ever thought you could know about something that is critical to daily life and taken entirely for granted as long as it works. Also, it is fun to read a book like this that is written by someone so deeply interested in this topic, so well informed, but willing to share the knowledge in a form that is readily accessible to the non-expert.

Audio Bones: Inside and Out narrated by L. J. Ganser
Great Book. Dr. Meals has been a remarkable surgeon, clinician, educator at UCLA for decades. This book is a remarkable summary of his fascination, research on the structure of bone, and its influence on development, biology, motion, stability. A wonderful read on so many levels. I hope he will create a version for younger children to stimulate a life long fascination with science.

An entertaining, informative, and witty tour of the life and afterlife of bones. Extensively researched and packed with information describing bone the living tissue as well as the many ingenious and fascinating ways that bone has been used by our ancestors over the millennia. Highly recommended for anyone with any level of interest in the “world’s best building material”.
