Closure, Limited and Other Zombie Stories

This is a collection of 4 stories that basically just didn’t quite fit into the flow of World War Z but that I’m assuming Max Brooks published because people like me begged him to. When I heard him mention in an interview that he’d written a story where China rebuilds the Great Wall to deal with the zombies, I wanted to read it. After reading it, I can see why he left it out of WWZ, but it’s still a good story and I recommend it. There’s 3 other stories and I liked them all. That’s all I can say without spoiling anything.

Yes, this book is short. It isn’t the immersive experience that World War Z is. World War Z is one of my favorite books ever so I had to pick this one up. I love the idea behind the closure limited story, I really feel like it could generate a full novel. A couple of the other stories could have easily been in the original novel but I still liked them, particularly the Great Wall story. As far as the vampire storyline is concerned, which a lot of people seem to take issue with, I don’t understand why people think it’s so out of place. These books take place in a fantasy world already, there are zombies, so why not vampires? That being said it was my least favorite of the stories and I am usually a vampire lore fan. It just felt flatter than the other stories. I haven’t read the vampire centric Extinction Parade series yet that focuses on this aspect, maybe it would make that story have more impact. For the low price it was and the closure limited and Great Wall stories alone I think it’s worth the purchase.

Brooks’ take on Zombie narratives is fantastic. The eponymous short is a nutshell of why World War Z was such a great read: surprisingly insightful seemingly oblique stories about the human condition facing extinction. The Great Wall would have been a Closure, Great for that book. Sorry, Max.

Only wish there was more.

I picked this up as due diligence to better understand what Brooks was trying to accomplish with his story credit behind The Great Wall 2017. Still clueless on that count.

It’s okay just so short it only took me about 45 minutes to read. Seems like the publisher marketed it as a companion to WWZ, but really was probably on the cutting room floor from that book. Seems like they were trying to milk fans out of a couple more bucks. Stories are okay.

Good stories but..book is tiny. VERY small..and only 120ish pages. If they made it a standard size..would be even shorter! Nice to have it tho. Shipped fast.(even tho amazon still says its in the mail weeks later)
