Curse on the Land

This book, Curse on the Land, is further proof that Faith Hunter is an excellent story teller. The slow build of each character is amazing. Every person, every situation makes you live the story. Just like the Jane Yellowrock, this series rocks.

Curse on the Land audiobook Series Shifters Soulwood

For people who just want to hear about the book:
It’s well-written (only to be expected with Hunter’s work), Nell continues to develop both as a person and in her ability to use and understand her gifts. The mystery is unusual, strong and complex; its solution happens believably and the resolution is realistically messy. The dynamics within the team continue to deepen, as does Nell’s sense of being at home in, and valuable to the team’s work. There was a lot in the book about teamwork, how each member interacts with the others, where the authority lies and how it’s used. Not all of those aspects were clean or simple, but that’s usually how it is in any group, much less a group as powerful and individual as Team 18. Some of the team’s and leadership’s secrets get shared, voluntarily or not, and that alters the power dynamic between some of the members. We’ll see in the next books what effect that change has. A lot of the loose ends from this book are left to be filled out in the next ones, but there isn’t a cliffhanger as the central mystery is fully resolved. It’s a fun, adrenaline-fuelled read, and I think, an even better book than the last Soulwood story.

For people interested in comparing Hunter’s two series set in this same world:
For me, the Soulwood series has gotten to be better than the Yellowrock one. Maybe it’s because Nell is more all one person than Jane–with her doubled soul, cultural and temporal displacement–can be. Maybe it’s how rooted Nell is in community, in family, church and unit. Maybe it’s because the puzzles in the Soulwood series are so unexpected and fascinating, as is watching Nell learn who she is. The three words I used as the review title certainly also apply to Nell herself (along with energetic, scarred and headstrong). All of them define Jane Yellowrock too, but they add up to a different sum where Jane’s concerned. Nell has something to her that’s gentler and more appealing, along with a sidelong way of looking at the world that Jane doesn’t have. Jane’s a warrior first and foremost and Beast doubles that power in her. Though she’s mostly let go of the completely black vs. white viewpoint she was clinging to through the beginning of the series, she still retains the cold cutting edge that allows her to react to danger by reducing the people involved to their lowest common denominator of enemy/not enemy. This ability, perhaps borrowed from Beast, allows Jane to react with astonishing speed and clarity. . .and it’s nothing Nell could ever do. Nell still loses her hold on situations because the people in them pull at her so strongly. It means she makes mistakes, but they’re often very human mistakes and very forgivable. Maybe it comes down to that I like Nell, and while I’d trust Jane, I’m not sure I’d ever be comfortable around her.

Audiobook Curse on the Land by Faith Hunter

Words can’t describe how much I love Faith Hunter and the world she has created around Jane Yellowrock and now Nell Ingram. I loved the first book in the Soulwood series and Nell became as dear to me as Jane has done. This book people just completely blew me away. The science, the intricacy, the ever twisted and convoluted plots, the politics and now the policing too. Nell has a mystery to solve and it seems she is in a unique position to solve it. Her strength of spirit, intelligence and bravery just shone through. I am so excited to see where the next book will take us, there are so many threads to follow, like how is Rick doing? (big revelation in this one folks and although I have had my share of love and hate for him through the Jane books, I have always had a bit of a thing for him and wish him to find his peace) What exactly is Nell? Are we going to see the old ones again? How is Nell going to cure her land?

The story itself though got solved, with much blood shed and tears. Despite the paranormal overlay of this world, the story itself remains so current. Corrupt companies with their thoughts on the money, the threat of terrorism, the background of possible natural disaster, the consequences of how we are polluting our world and most of all the human individual and the choices we make. I won’t bore you with what happens, if you’re reading this you probably already know this wonderful author, if not, please please you are missing out, go start at the beginning. What I will say is it left me breathless and it consumed my every waking thought for days. As always a little of this wonderful world always stays with me in between books, it remains one of my absolute favourites.

Audio Curse on the Land narrated by Khristine Hvam

Wonderful, breathtaking, brilliant – I can only agree with the comments made by the previous reviewers about Ms Hunter’s latest novel. Reading Ms Hunter’s novels is like enjoying the most wonderful meal with perfect wine and sparkling company – you can’t wait for the next course but you just don’t want it to end!

There are many angles to this story, which makes it all the richer, but I love how Nell is developing in her abilities, not just magically, but as a brilliant analyst and PsyLED agent. Some of the developments made me stop to think about the implications for both Nell and her world but also for Jane Yellowrock. Either way, I am looking forward to more of Nell’s story. I appreciate that writing these books must be a real labour, albeit of love, for Ms Hunter, with the level of thought and detail behind each story, but I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next one.

It took me a day or so to get my thoughts together to write this review simply because I felt stunned at the depth of the story, the need to sit and “read just a bit more” was profound. I was disappointed that I had come to the end of the novel. Faith has balanced this book beautifully.
I”ve read a number of blog reviews before reading my copy of Curse on the Land.
I just have to say I disagree with some that mentioned there was too much technical information. Faith Hunter has balanced technical information with the context of the story extremely well so that the reader fully understands what each thing means quickly and efficiently. This is a novel about a government agency called psyLED so the tech detail is needed to inform those who don’t watch CSI, medical type programmes where acronyms are a common thing. Without this very well researched aspect Curse on the Land would be lacking that special ingredient. A bit like making a cake without eggs.

My view is one of speechless appreciation. I think it’s a brilliant piece of writing. The story of Nell becoming Special Agent Nell Ingram with PsyLED starts with Nell coming home after her time away from Soulwood from Spook School. Her first case quickly takes you to areas of land which had been attacked by a mysterious fungus type slime. Nell works alongside team mates JoJo, T. Laine, Tandy, Occam and Team boss Rick Lefluer to deduce the case information, but, It’s the week of the full moon which is having a rather furry effect on Occam, Paka and Rick who is painfully stuck mid change because of an unfinished spell woven in to his Leopard tattoos. Paka’s job is to help Rick to break through the spell and change into his Black were-Leopard form which he was infected after being bitten by another were. So Occam, Paka, Rick and his Grindylow Pea are away most of the case dealing with their furry feline side and keeping an eye on Rick.
