Dark Coven Rising (Demigoddess Chronicles #2)

I love immersing myself in the worlds and characters created by J.S. Malcom. This one was as fast paced and action packed as the previous books. Julia gets to explore her new powers and gain confidence in her abilities. We get to see the fall out from the last book and how it impacted the characters and just what they’re going to do about it. I really can’t rave enough about the characters. Seeing Julia, Cassie and Autumn snark at each other and support each other is what makes these books so real and immediate. You don’t feel like the events of the book are happening to characters, you feel like these people are your friends and you root for them to save the world. I don’t want to go into specifics of the book and take away from your enjoyment of discovering what happens for yourself. I would just recommend reading this and all books by J.S. Malcom.

“Dark Coven Rising” is the second book in the Demigoddess Chronicles by J.S. Malcolm. It is set in the same story worlds as the earlier Fae Witch Chronicles and Realm Watchers series. It uses many of the same characters, and reading the previous two series will provide a lot of backstory in a thoroughly exciting and enjoyable manner! That said, the Demigoddess Chronicles can stand on its own as a complete series. I love J.S. Malcolm’s books, and Dark Coven Rising is no exception with lots of action and supernatural activity. The end of the book came way too soon for me, and I had to find book 3! I will start reading that book as soon as I post this review, LOL! In the interest of clarity, I want to state that I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinion as a beta reader.

Julias story continues as Malcom pulls you deeper into the web of Magic from witches, vampires, fae, other dimensions, and now goddesses. Trials and tribulations face Julia in the first novel of Dark Coven Rising, but now we see her further begin to accept who she is, what she can do, and how she along with Autumn and Cassie, can stop this dark coven. In order for any to succeed they have always needed the other and the fact that they cannot do this on their own is greatly enhanced through Julias story.

When Malcom first wrote Autumns story I wrote to her begging for her to continue it. Through Cassies and Julias tales, she really brings you full circle to the characters in a rather unexpected way that leaves you pondering whats next. Definitely not a twist you want to miss!! I am so excited for the next chapters to Julias mission and life!

I was blown away by Empyrean Witch, the first book in J.S. Malcoms Demigoddess Chronicles series (which I separately reviewed). No surprise, then, that Ive been eagerly awaiting Dark Coven Rising: Demigoddess Chronicles Book 2. Well, Im happy to report that it was worth the wait. Julia & Co are back in full force. She still needs to claim all three talismans to unlock demigoddess powers – or die trying as the Dark Coven is growing in numbers and power. Scary days but the makings for fine fiction in the hands of a talented writer like this one. Superbly written and wonderfully imaginative, this is the good stuff and easy to highly recommend.

J.S Malcom has the ability to pull you into these amazing stories, with likeable characters, interesting worlds and creative creatures. The story has a nice flow, slowing building up the anticipation, followed by an ‘on the edge of your seat’ full-on magical action. An enjoyable book with some more mystery included, which is leaving me with wanting more and soon!

This book and this series as well as previous series from this author are highly recommended.
