James Lee Burke should be called our Prose Laureate. His body of work is the direct descendant of William Faulkner and extends south from The Grapes of Wrath and west of Tobacco Road. He has raised to a position of honor the Bayous and the rivers of Louisiana, plus all the state has stood for, good people and bad, politicians and pirates, the great and the defeated by weather and mismanaged government, no matter if the un-surmountable is Federal neglect, or Statewide corruption or downright local hooliganism. The women freshen up and sweat ten minutes later, the men forget to shave because they’re out in the dusk of an afternoon, to commit crimes in order to preserve the best in their environment and they do the best they can to weed out the truly intolerable But underneath the punishments, the men and the women understand and even love their bad guys because they grew up with them and they remember them when.. before hope was burned out of their eyes.

Add to that the Creole lilt, the undulating music inherent in the caterwauling of the people who inhabit his pages, and one wonders if he will continue to write and enhance his body of work. If this writer had a Russian last name, Putin or not, Jones would be given parades in his honor every other week; but we, the USA as a country are too busy watering down our language and homogenizing our attitudes to please everyone….. while James Lee Burke moseys down to his shack on the creek, gets a cold drink from the cooler, checks on the fish haul for the day, and returns to his porch to dip a pen into the darkened blood which informs his work and thrills the careful and respectful reader. Read it all in the order in which it is written and you will enhance your own life. His books will never be dated, will always instruct by showing without shame the hardscrap life on the rivers of Louisiana.

Dixie City Jam audiobook in series Dave Robicheaux

The story was solid, but the editing was horrendous. Missing punctuation, words randomly capitalized or not, numerous misspelled words, all of which take you out of the story.

I love reading on my Fire and Kindle, I love the convenience of getting books immediately, I just get disgusted sometimes when I pay good money for what should’ve been a great reading experience and end up disappointed by the poor quality of the e-book’s end presentation.

Audiobook Dixie City Jam by James Lee Burke

I’m a fan of Burke’ s writing & of his Dave Robicheaux series. This book begins with Dave diving off the shore off the Louisiana coast and investigating an old sunken Nazi submarine. As the story progresses numerous people are interested in it & other Nazi sunken submarines from WW 2 in and around the gulf area. Some are including a man named Hippo Brimstine,on obese leader of the Democrats in New Orleans, Tommy Lonighan , an Irish local entrepreneur with casino’s and dealings with the local mob characters, the Calucci brother’s. The most desirous of these submarines is the bad guy in the book Will Buchalter and his sister Marie Gilbeaux. They weave through most of the book causing chaos and destruction.
I enjoyed the read.

Audio Dixie City Jam narrated by Will Patton

A great book, but I find all the errors and lack of editing extremely distracting. He is a fabulous author and his work should be treated with respect.

Free audio Dixie City Jam – in the audio player below

Misplaced punctuation, mispellings, transposition errors – even the creation of new words (eg “sel-fritious.” As near as I can figure, the definition of which must be an adjective describing one who feels entitled to inflict terror on others with the use of weaponized salt).
I love this author. He writes poetic prose with a richness of language and hypnotic cadence like no other and he really didn’t deserve to have his work presented so poorly.
