3 stars to Joanne Fluke’s Candy Cane Murder, a short novella edition for the holidays between books 9 and 10 of the “Hannah Swensen” mystery series. Given this is only 100 pages, and just a teaser in between full-length books, I adjusted my expectations, but it still fell a little short for me. I’ll keep reading the series, but nothing really changes in the overall series with this book, so if you skip it, not a huge deal.

Story
Hannah’s preparing for Christmas in Lake Eden by volunteering as an elf to help the local department store owner who is playing Santa Claus this season. Unfortunately, he’s a bit of a tightwad who rubs some of his employees and the villagers the wrong way. After the mall’s Christmas party, Hannah finds him face down on the corner of the street in his Santa suit. It’s the tenth body she’s found in about two years (yikes, stay away from her!), but still gives her the frights. Is it his new younger wife? Her friendly brother? An angry employee? Or someone else with a grudge? Hannah dives into the investigation behind Mike’s back and finds herself right in the middle of mayhem. Of course she survives, but the fun along the way keeps readers in suspense in between her normal shenanigans.

Strengths
By keeping the count of characters smaller, we are treated to more in-depth relationships among Hannah’s sisters and boyfriends (yes, she has a few). The plot has subtle humor and it gives readers readers something to noodle over among the villagers we’ve come to know and love. And there are good recipes!

Suggestions
It was rushed and Hannah didn’t even pretend to let the police track the killer. It felt too much like writing a long short story to keep fans entertained rather than release a full-length complex story that would make them wait a few extra months. It took me less than 90 minutes and while I was entertained, it was too basic.

Final Thoughts
If you’re just looking to read more about Hannah and don’t need a lot of substance in your mystery, then jump on in… but if you want intrigue and complexity and a big ole’ candy cane to chew on, don’t expect much. Worth the read because Hannah is just a fun character, but go in with your eyes open.

Candy Cane Murder series Hannah Swensen

I enjoyed reading these three stories by some of my favorite cozy mystery authors.
“Candy Cane Murder” — this was a lot of fun and as usual, I love the recipes. I missed Moishe, Hannah’s cat, though. I love all of his antics.
“The Dangers of Candy Canes” — I love Jaine and her sense of humor (and how she tries so hard to resist great food, but ends up caving). I liked Angel’s character and how she and Jaine finally bonded, sort of. Jaine’s cat, Prozac’s, thoughts are pretty funny, although not quite as snarky as they were in other books.
“Candy Canes of Christmas Past” — I liked all of the stories, but this was my favorite. I loved going back to 1983 and reading how the heroine and her husband moved from New York City to Maine and tried to fix up the old farm house they bought. I loved meeting the characters from the author’s other books and the small-town Maine setting. Plus the mystery about the town librarian’s parents was interesting.

Audiobook Candy Cane Murder by Joanne Fluke

All the stories were well written and got from the crime to the solution without any unexplained leaps of logic that so often mar mystery short stories. I bought this because I am a great fan of Fluke’s Hannah Swensen series – her story “Candy Cane Murder” is not only a worthwhile entry in the series, but serves as an enjoyable introduction to that series. I had not read Levine’s Jaine Austen series nor Meier’s Lucy Stone series before, but after reading Levine’s “Dangers of Candy Canes” and Meier’s “Candy Canes of Christmas Past” I was checking Fiction Database for the names of the first books of each series and then going to Amazon to put the books on my Wishlist for my next order. A fun book, which I highly recommend to cosy lovers.

Audio Candy Cane Murder narrated by Suzanne Toren

I enjoyed reading these novellas. I have always enjoyed Leslie Meir’s books, And I love the Hannah Swensen Series by Joanna Fluke. I just wish she would put the recipes at the end. I had never read Laura Levine before and was very pleased to discover a new favorite writer.

The book contains three different stories, all mysteries and all involving candy canes. The first story had recipes interspersed and our book club read the book and prepared some of the recipes for our meeting. The recipes were good, the story was rather slow and predictable. The second story moved faster and was funny. The third story I liked the best. It seemed more realistic. We always like to read a Christmas book for December and we thought it would be fun to make the recipes.

The stories in this anthology were so enjoyable that I’ve purchased a copy for my mom and, after enjoying it herself, she passed a copy along to my sister. All three stories are well written. My favorite would be Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swenson mystery, but Laura Levine’s Jaine Austen mystery was a close second. Both mysteries flowed well and had some “laugh-out-loud” moments peppered throughout. The mysteries kept me guessing. I thought I had it figured out, but kept second guessing until the very end.

Leslie Meier’s story was not quite as funny and entertaining, but more of a “yeah, I’ve been there” kind of tale, with a little bit of a mystery mixed in. Still an enjoyable read, though.

I highly recommend this to add a little cheer and diversion to your holidays, or to any time of year! It won’t keep you up at night in fright and suspense, but you might want to stay up just for the fun of reading it.
