Freedom in the Family

After hearing about the book on CBC radio I had to get the book. I thought it was a good read and makes you remember the hardship of those that where the unsung heroes of the civil rights movement. Makes me think that nowadays that the movement was so trivialized and explained like it was a walk trough the park. In talking about the civil rights one would think that the south was the only place that jim crow laws took place. The thought that Florida was this sunshine beautiful place that everyone got along. No that is not truth and the book hits on the racial barriers that where just as rough as in other places in the deep south. What I do find interesting is that they speak of the many whites that supported the movement and sided with blacks throughout the movement. That is something that is not talked about enough.. what i think was missing was talk of how the family felt after MLK was killed. Also the the lack of talk about the late 60’s and the black power movement. The nation of islam was mentioned but not talked about also. So the only criticism was more about the late 60’s and early 70’s. All and all I think people should pick up this book.

This book was fantastic reading. I loved reading this book. Patricia Due and Tananarive Due did an excellent job in reflecting the living conditions and the fight for civil rights during the 1950’s – present day. They give a detailed account of the sacrifices which were made by people who stood-up for their civil rights. I had heard about C.O.R.E. , but I didn’t know about how people were trained to peacefully resist the discrimination against black people. Now I know that people of various races worked together to achieve civil rights for people who were discriminated against.

I grew up in the 50’s-60’s and was unaware all this was going on in Florida and the country. It’s a wonderful story of a family so dedicated to what they believed in. It made me think back to that time when there were separate bathrooms for whites and blacks and at the movie theatre the blacks had to sit only in the balcony, and I thought nothing of it at the time and now it makes me sick that I was so naive. I should have been in Tallahassee with Mrs. Due at the Woolworths counter protesting the injustice of it all. This is a wonderful book.

Really great book about the civil rights hardships written from two perspectives of two different points time eras. Favorite part was when a born slave, was given the opportunity to vote.

I was very disappointed that the book I received did not include the 17 pictures that are to be included in the book. I am not sending the book back, because it includes some family members. Then, the company sent me a book that says Bound Galley- Not for sale. The name of the company is Ballatine Books, therefore I feel that I bought a counterfeit book. I know one of authors and will be emailing her concerning this.
