This book was incredible!! Melissa Toppens writing style is simply perfect. Once I started this book I didn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end.
Melanie and Cole were the perfect couple. They were childhood friends and Melanie had been in love with him forever. After graduation they lose touch until tragedy brings them back together 6 years later and it was like no time passed at all.
This book was my favorite type of second chance story childhood best friends. It was so sweet and sad at the same time. This is a couple you will truly root for cause the love is evident in every word written on the pages!!

If you love a second chance romance, then you will definitely enjoy this book. Cole and Melanie’s story is a perfect telling of second chance love, so I bet you’re asking, why the three star rating? Well.. let me tell you. There were parts of this book that were absolutely amazing, I couldn’t put it down, and then there were other parts of this book that had me going what? scratching my head, or just waiting for the chapter to end. If all of this book could have captured me as much as about 3/4 of this book did then this would have no doubt been a 5 star book for me. Cole and Melanie were best friends from the age of ten, they were inseparable, problem was Melanie was always in love with him, and Cole left to go chase his dreams in college while Melanie stayed home to take care of her brothers and her dying mom. When tragedy strikes and they’re thrown into each others lives again, the spark is still there for Melanie, but things stand in their way.I won’t deny the chemistry between Cole and Melanie is undeniable, it’s strong and it’s hot, but how both of them went about their feelings for one another now that they are back in each other’s lives I was not a fan of, especially Melanie. It seemed that once they found each other again, no one else mattered except them, and I get that, new love and all that jazz, but it just seemed to annoy me a bit, granted I did love their story, but not that they seemed to forget their friends and how everything seemed to only revolve around each other from that day forward. Take away their what I call selfishness, these two are absolutely perfect for one another, and their love story is beautiful. I had a hard time coming to a decision on how to write this review, since I was conflicted with how I felt about this story. I say if you’re a lover of friends to lovers or second chance romances, then give it a shot. I see a lot of other reviewers who absolutely adored this book, but to me, I just had a hard time with some of the parts in this book, but then adored and loved other parts of it. How We Fall just wasn’t 100% my cup of tea but I don’t regret reading it!

Audiobook How We Fall by Melissa Toppen
Childhood best friends unknowingly gave the other their heart at 10 years old. At 14 Cole is dating their other friend Dawn, which in turn made Melanie push him away. Then Dawn letting it slip to Mel that they took their virginity together, which broke Mels heart more. Melanie has loved Cole but knew he didnt love her and she couldnt say anything or ask him. Cole loves Mel but was to chicken to let her know so he dated and screwed away her memory when he left their little town after high school and went to NYU.
6 years, Mel lost her mother, brought a home at 19 to raise her two younger brothers, worked her butt of to give them a good life and had 1 boyfriend of 2 years. Plus she lost her other best friend, Micheal in War, and that brings Cole back but with girlfriend on his arm.
Cole and Melanie will test themselves from temptation, they will face life changing Decisions, face their past and what the other means for the future.

First, I listened to the audio version with the Audible Romance Package. I liked the narrators normal voice, but her guy voice was terrible. So, emotionless and bland.
I enjoyed this story for the most part. It’s really sweet and the connection between the characters is great. This is a friends to lovers storyline. Both were too scared to tell the other how they feel, so it took over 6 years for them to finally start being real with each other. They met as kids, then into high school, but separated for 6 years during college and such and now they are back in the same town for the funeral of a mutual friend. The main male character, Cole, got with their mutual friend when they were younger and that really hurt the heroine, Melanie. He used the whole I was a stupid boy excuse, but he continued to pick other girls over Melanie for years, so he sucks for that. He always went with the vain, stuck-up girl too, so annoying. Why are guys so blind? I liked that Melanie didn’t wait around for him to catch a clue, and she actually matured throughout the years and realizes that the high school junk isn’t something she needs to hold on to. There’s some flashback scenes, which I could’ve done without. They didn’t add enough to the story for me. When they meet back up after the 6 years apart, Melanie has a long time boyfriend and Cole has some rando that he’s sleeping with, so there’s a little drama with that. Melanie really dragged her feet with her poor boyfriend, so I wish she wouldn’t have strung him along for as long as she did and leave him with some hope. I wish she would’ve woman upped a lot sooner. There’s very little angst in this story, it’s more about Cole and Mel re-connecting. The chemistry is wonderful between them and there’s a great depth to their feelings for each other. That’s the main thing I loved about this story. Overall, sweet, heartfelt friends to lovers story.

I loved this story, its characters and its setting. I loved that the guy was a total mush ball. I love that she was the same and that together they hung in there and ended up with the perfect relationship.
And that’s its flaw. The story was too perfect. Everything fell right for them. But you know what, I don’t care! I loved it!
