As a homeschool parent, I was always on the lookout for the next book or book series that would really get one of my kids reading. Of course, interests vary, so book choices need to be tailored to each individual child.
When my older daughter discovered The Baby-Sitters Club books, I knew I was onto something. I must have bought 100 of these books, all of which she devoured. She also reread many of them. At that age, anything that gets them reading and keeps them reading is a win. From that perspective, I can highly recommend these books.
My daughter loved them so much that she was never willing to part with them. She now teaches fourth grade and took the books to her classroom!
One of the characters has Type I Diabetes. While I applaud inclusion of any character with a disability in childrens books, mistakes were made. We know this because my younger daughter has Type I Diabetes. But even that proved educational because we discussed the diabetes situations as they arose.

Audiobook Jessi’s Baby-sitter by Ann M. Martin
I remember thinking that this one was another good example of kids reacting to problems in highly inefficient, silly ways. In this case, Jessi is frustrated with her Aunt Cecelia becoming her caretaker and suddenly turning into a dictator (questioning her babysitting jobs, controlling what she eats, etc.). So she and her sister decide the obvious thing to do is play stupid pranks on their aunt so she’ll want to leave. This reminds me of the ridiculous crap Dawn pulled to get Mary Anne out of her room in a previous book. Why do these kids have to learn over and over again that being a passive-aggressive jerk to adults is something you probably ought to not resort to, especially since everything is fixed as soon as you just talk to the grown-ups and tell them how you feel? Communication, kids, communication! Of course, it wouldn’t be a Baby-Sitters Club book without a remarkably parallel plot in the kids’ babysitting lives, so Jessi finds herself babying and bossing one of her sitting charges around until she realizes what she did to him is a lot like what Aunt Cecelia is doing to her. Surprise!

Audio Jessi’s Baby-sitter narrated by Bahni Turpin
I bought “Jessi’s Baby-Sitter” by Ann M. Martin for my 5th grade cousin. I have spent countless hours reading this book with her. The language of the book is well written for a youngster her age, with some big words to build vocabulary. This book was about Jessi and her friends dealing with pre-teen problems of their pre-teen life. Jessi is upset because her aunt has come to tend the house and to Jessi’s worst fear to baby sit her and her sibblings. The book details how Jessi feels and how the problem is solved. Hardley any author writes realistic views on pre-teen life. So this book’s content and the whole series is excellent. My cousin says the books are “fun and enjoyable.” I must add the characters in the book seeem not like story book characters but like real people who live among us. This is an excellent book, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who knows a pre-teen.
