A successful mission brought Imriel and Sidonie closer to each other and now after seeing the consequences they finally decide to tell about their affair. They have kept their feelings hidden for a very long time and this only made their situation worse. The ancestors of the current generation paid heavily for trusting Melisande and now they are not ready to trust her son again.

All of this does not kill the developing love between the two who were once supposed to be rivals for the throne and now they have found a way to share it. Jacqueline Carey has not brought this twist at once in the series rather all it was always on the cards. The developing relationships in the previous parts were a clear sign that the lovers were coming closer and closer.

Narrator Simon Vance also kept a properly well-tamed tone for them throughout. The narrator took such steps in Kushiel’s Chosen and Kushiel’s Avatar before this one. The task which is given to Imriel by the queen on this occasion is a really tough one. According to the orders of the queen, Imriel must bring his mother back to the world so that she could be executed for her bad deeds and if he does not complete the task he will not be allowed to marry Sidonie. Also if Sidonie tries to interfere or takes any step on her own then she would not be the heir to the throne anymore.
