So what if I’m spending a fortune each week buying Andy Carpenter mysteries – what a fun way to read. I love the stories, the dogs and all the characters. I finish one book and then want more and through the miracle of Kindle, the next book can be mine without even getting out of bed! These are entertaining stories and I’ve recommended them to all my doggy friends. Read them and enjoy. It’s a nice to actually read about criminals being put in jail – go Andy!

Leader of the Pack audiobook in series Carpenter Series

Did you ever find an author who you just loved his or her books and look forward to the next, but eventually become disenchanted by seemingly forced writing and weak story lines that make you want to tear your hair out? Me too! Geez, I hate that!

Well, whenever that happens, I always look forward to a new Andy Carpenter Mystery penned by David Rosenfelt. I have read all of the books in this series and to date; he has never disappointed me (Knock on wood.).

Rosenfelt’s latest novel, 360-paged “Leader of the Pack,” was a pure joy to read. Like others in this series, this legal mystery thriller can stand on its own; however, the enjoyable core characters return as some new characters are cleverly developed and woven into another entertaining, mesmerizing tale that keeps readers riveted to the edge of their chair from beginning to end satisfied by incredibly enthralling writing, but yearning for the next edition.

Audiobook Leader of the Pack by David Rosenfelt

I have just finished the last of the series- 12 Dogs of Christmas (latest is not out yet). I have read all 15 of David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter books. I have never actually laughed out loud while reading a book before but the author’s dry and sometimes self deprecating humor is a pleasure. There are often twists and surprises…..damns exploding in Peru, gun running, homicide. Crime families are just not what they used to be and there’s no honor among………any longer. A thoroughly enjoyable read, as they all were. If you love a good mystery with humor and lots of plot twists and you are a dog lover you can’t go wrong with any of the books in the series. I am waiting for the next one.

Audio Leader of the Pack narrated by Grover Gardner

Andy Carpenter is a wisecracking defense attorney who annoys a lot of people, but he has some nice traits. One is that he keeps visiting guys who are jail because he failed to get them off. Every now and then he discovers a way to appeal. This happens with Joey Desimone, convicted of murdering his mistress and her husband.

It’s a pleasure to follow the workings of Andy’s devious legal mind. And to see how much effort he puts into concocting a defense, with the evidence strong against his client.

Andy‘s probing invariably results in violent behavior on the part of the bad guys. In this book there are close calls in store for Andy, and even his accountant. As usual, Andy’s personal bodyguard, investigator and terminator Marcus Clarke saves the lives of his friends and deals most effectively with the people trying to kill them. I wait impatiently in every book for Marcus to appear out of the blue and do what Marcus does.

I just enjoyed the heck out of this book. It was a good, well-developed mystery that would have been satisfying, anyway. Then you add in the clever writing – I had more Kindle highlights from this book than any other. Going back to read the highlights cracks me up – they are genuinely funny even outside the mood of the book. If I had one *tiny* complaint, it would be that the case investigated is not about a dog, although Andy Carpenter’s perfect Golden Retriever, Tara, is clearly part of the investigative team. On the other hand, a lot of mystery writers have their genre/gimmick become so labored that it weighs down the book; if Rosenfelt needs a break from dog cases, I can live with that, as long as the product is as rewarding as this book. Eagerly awaiting the next!
