Maigret Defends Himself

As the number of Penguin’s re-translations of the police procedurals featuring Commissaire Maigret of the Paris Police Judiciare swells ever larger, readers cannot help but be impressed by Georges Simenon’s fertile imagination in spinning original plots. And that is particularly the case with “Maigret Defends Himself” (Maigret se defend), which was originally published in 1964. This was fairly close to the end of the Maigret series, by which time most readers will have developed a great fondness for Maigret, leading them to agonize when he is accused of a crime that he did not commit.

Such a false accusation might not be interesting in and of itself, but it was made by a young lady of social standing against the straight-laced Commissaire. Moreover, the final solution to the case–explaining why she sought to end his career in a cloud of scandal–is one of the most surprising in all the Maigret oeuvre. Adding to the intrigue is how the Commissaire’s visits to the apartment of one of Paris’s most notorious gang leaders turn out to both underlay the efforts to bring Maigret down and help resolve the case. Among the BBC DVDs featuring Michael Gambon, this mystery episode is one of the most enjoyable.

Margret series is an astounding series of books. So well written, a slice of real life.
Have every one translated so far. Love them.
