Diane Harbaugh. is a fascinating character. with a trobiules history of personal relationships and a spotty career record first as a prosecutor and later as a DEA agent. There is no doubt that she is a gifted interrogator, buts she is betrayed by impulsiveness. and a willingness to cut corners. When a cartel biggie contacts her she cant resist embarking on an ill advised solo mission in Mexico to \”turn him. She doesn\’t even speak Spanish! The. ambitious narrative features well observed descriptions. and raises frank questions about the intersection of the war on terrorism and the war on drugs. It reminded me of Dog Soldiers ,the late great Robert Sone\’s novel about smuggling drugs from Viet Nam

I had read \”Fourth of July Creek\” and felt that the writer (Smith Henderson) was a real talent. Then this popped up on my radar and was blown away. The story line is very far from \”Fourth…\” and was paced much differently. The author is talented. The ending of this book implies future adventures with the protagonists which I very much look forward to.

Audiobook Make Them Cry by Smith Henderson
A super fast thriller with a literary touch. There’s a multi page car chase that’s so vivid I though I was watching it on the big screen. Lots of twists and turns. And some great Chandler-esque similes and metaphors. A great (but temporary) escape from Covid-19.

Audio Make Them Cry narrated by Sophie Amoss
The good news is that I finished the novel; the bad news is that I recommend you not start. It did keep my interest, but I don\’t know why. maybe I was hoping it would get more realistic or better. hard to believe situations and characters; more of a cinematic story than a novel.
