The audible version. Both actors did a great job, very enjoyable to listen to. I might listen to it again.
The book itself? Disappointing. And I’m a fan of Roberts.
The heroine. Lena and secondary characters (Remy, Odette) were excellent. The paranormal aspect was good.
But….
While I liked the hero, he seemed a bit like a stalker. He is just bound and determined to get the girl, and have babies. Right away. Really??
Then, and worst of all, towards the end of the book, there was this mad rush to end the book. All of a sudden, poof! Book over. I’m thinking, “Huh?? Say what?? That was…abrupt.”
Roberts does a much better job with the paranormal in the “In The Garden” trilogy and she may have decided she could have done better and expanded this book’s concept in a longer version.
Bottom line: skip this and just read the In The Garden trilogy. It starts with Blue Dahlia, than Black Rose then Red Lily.

As an old house junkie, especially New Orleans’s old houses, I was intrigued by the concept of this book one rainy night when desiring a spooky story.
I’ll state my ignorance upfront here: I had no idea who Nora Roberts was. I’m not a consumer of romances which is what this seems to be.
Let me sum it up for you: handsome, wealthy man with a penchant for antiques buy a rambling old mansion in New Orleans. Other characters include fellow privileged best friend and two teeny tiny petite women. I describe them as such because they are picked up, manhandled and tossed around the entirety of the story! Within one chapter the protagonist manages to pick them both up “by the elbows” while having an otherwise normal adult conversation.
This book seems to be filled with some weird fetishization of small women and I am not here for it.

Audiobook Midnight Bayou by Nora Roberts
Ive read both old and new NR, and this is *classic* Nora Roberts. Masterful story telling that pulls you deeper and deeper into the story with each chapter, leaving small bits of information and hints that keeps you thinking about it long after you close the book for the night. Not suspenseful (and because of that, I was surprised how much I liked it), but haunting, spooky and a true love story. The pacing is a bit slow, but very rewarding in the end. Loved the characters. This would make a fantastic movie. Cant say it enough – this is old-school Nora storytelling and in my opinion, those are her best books. Highly recommend.

Audio Midnight Bayou narrated by James Daniels Sandra Burr
This is only the second Nora Roberts book Ive read (first was Year One) and Im so excited to say she is my new favorite author! I absolutely loved Midnight Bayou, everything from the characters to the plot to the setting, you name it. I loved escaping into New Orleans and the bayous with Declan, feeling the desire between both he and Lena despite their random bickering sessions, and dying to know how/when Declan and Lena would find out about the history of the house and who they really are. For those of you complaining about how often the main characters fought, every relationship is different and it made it seem more real to me versus reading about a perfect relationship, like the one between the main characters in Year One. It would be boring and unrealistic to me to read about a perfect relationship in every book I pick up. The only thing I am wishing for now is for Nora Roberts to make a book about Abigail and Lucian, their families, and how all of that got started. All in all, I highly recommend this book!!!

Loved D ec . Liked the paranormal element. This sweet innocent woman died tragically. Rang true there wouldn’t be peace after a death like that. Angelina’s character was great also and in this age of narcotic overdoses and drug related problems a good idea. More people than will admit have a family member or friend with the issue. The sweet grandma and parents and the beautiful love story sold me!
