This is the first in a series, so be prepared that if you like it then the others will become necessary reads. (I have just finished #11.) Also this series was published under different titles, so make sure you aren’t getting something you already have. Now on to the review. The books are murder mystery/British police procedural with some personal storyline thrown in. They are well written, drop hints about the identity of the murderer without being too obvious and come to satisfying conclusions. They are British, so expect British slang and customs but they have little sex and little fowl language. The title tells you where, hints along the way will tell you who (so if you don’t like guessing the who before it is revealed, then this series is not for you), the investigation tells how and why and when, but the story isn’t all about the murder. The author manages to incorporate a lot of personal stuff about all the characters without it taking over the story. However the personal stuff is the continuing part so if you like the characters, then you will want more. The books are relatively short, not too complicated but well written, and great for trips, beach reads, rainy afternoons, etc. The author does do summary bits of the personal things that occur, but the books should be read in order. Each Amazon summary has a handy list of the titles in order.

Murder on the Oxford Canal audiobook in series DI Hillary Greene

Can you really enjoy reading about someone being so oppressed by friend’s and foe alike. The dream of a good book is there, but gets beaten out by co-worker villains, lecherous supervisors making the office a meat hunt as if it’s their right, and supervisors stealing any good works performed. Only in the last few pages does she come up from the drowning everyone is holding her under. No one wants to read about the poor underdog who has to keep digging out. As a first book it doesn’t make me want to read anymore! It just makes me relieved i finally finished it.

Audiobook Murder on the Oxford Canal by Faith Martin

i ordered the book without being able to read inside it and found i did not like the language fitting for any female, cop or no – i am not a prude at all, but books can be well-written and thoroughly entertaining without coarse language – i deleted the book from my library

Audio Murder on the Oxford Canal narrated by Gemma Dawson

Well My My My!
I am an avid detective novel reader especially British Isles. After reading this book I have followed every book in the series
without ever being bored. I just love the twists and turns and various charcters Faith Martin presents. I just can’t see how anyone can write such
interesting books time after time.

On the one hand, this novel is a fairly traditional, but excellently written, Police Procedural mystery set in the same Thames Valley police district made famous by Colin Dexter’s D.I. Morse. On the other hand, however, this novel is peopled by a whole group of interesting coppers and criminals and points of view, with the primary voice belonging to D.I. Hillary Greene.

I cannot say enough about much I enjoyed this first novel in a series about D.I. Greene and the very interesting cast of characters that are the heart of this “ripped from the headlines,” excellently plotted murder mystery. Anyone who enjoys the Police Procedural type of mystery novel will appreciate this book. Be prepared to negotiate the advertised twists, including an internal corruption investigation, a major drug trade investigation, office politics, and the wants and needs of the main characters. For me these twists and turns added to the book.

I look forward to reading more from the series.
