I love detective stories when one of the prime characters is a dog! I was lead to believe that the Golden Retriever was a big part of this story.
Unfortunately, that is not the case. The dog named “Tara” is only mentioned four or five times and had absolutely nothing to
do with the plot. Those looking for a good story about man and his dog solving crime won’t find it here. Had I known that Tara was just
mentioned and not featured this book would not have been ordered. Sorry.

Open and Shut audiobook in series Carpenter Series

Although I am not normally a fan of the murder mystery/lawyer type of novels, this was a good book and I enjoyed it. It was suggested to me by a friend who lives in NJ, where I spent some “x” years – so, many of the places mentioned are familiar to me, as this book is set in the NJ suburbs of NYC.

I like the author’s writing style, and he fills in plenty of details so that you, the reader, actually feel you are at the locations being described.

I also found the “hero” to be likeable – one of the other things that resonates with me – I mean, who can dislike somebody who is a dog lover!

I did find one of those little errors that bugs me – on page 30 (paperback edition) the author writes “I go through the process of checking in and wait until the guard, Danny, comes to bring me to the cell block.” If you are going from the location where you are physically located then the proper word to use is “take” not “bring”. This seems to be a common error made in the NJ/NYC area – I once won a five dollar bet with one of my NYC educated employees who insisted that there was no difference between the two words and that they could be used interchangeably . Not true! As the Oxford Dictionaries says – “The essential difference between these two words is that bring implies movement towards someone or something: Bring your instrument with you when you come over. Whereas take implies movement away from someone or something: Take your belongings with you when you’re leaving.” I know – petty, but it still bugged me when I realized that this error was not picked up in proofing process.

Audiobook Open and Shut by David Rosenfelt

“Clever series”, says my brother-in-law. “Sorry”, says I. “I don’t do books with thinking animals that somehow solve crimes through deductions not apparent to humans”. My wife and sister may be into the cute animal mysteries but I will pass thankyouverymuch!

Well, I decided to give it a shot in a weak moment and was glad I did. The plot moves quickly, is quite clever and kept me guessing. The role of the dog prominently displayed on the cover? To do what dogs are supposed to do – hang around, enjoy doggie loves, go for walks with the owner and plop on the couch for a good part of the day.

So basically, the dog is more prop than participant and that is fine with me. He’s there because Andy Carpenter is a dog lover and the dog is part of his daily life. Andy is a smart mouth attorney, always ready with the clever quip and the insightful observation. Evidently a lot of books in this series so if I need another dose of Andy, there is no shortage of opportunities.

Audio Open and Shut narrated by Grover Gardner

Many reviewers have given a synopsis of the plot so I am going to say what I like about the book. There were many things, I liked. I liked the character of Andy Carpenter who is a defense lawyer. He has undertaken a case that does seem open and shut against his client. I liked his sense of humor. He strives to do the right thing. He is an animal lover. He lives with his golden retriever Tara who is based on his most perfect dog in the world that has passed away.

The plot of the mystery was very good. His time is very limited to prepare for the trial and you go along with him as he tries to find some break through. During this time, he finds himself in danger as someone doesn’t like him poking his nose into the past.

If you like legal mysteries, with engaging characters, humor , a very good plot and the location being New Jersey, you should really like this book. I know I did as I have already ordered the next three books for my Kindle.

I loved learning about lawyer Andy Carpenter! So funny! And his dog, Tara, adds to the humor and makes Andy even more human.

When his father, the retired DA, asks Andy to take on one of his old cases, hinting that the wrong man might be behind bars, neither really expects that Andy can bring about any change. Then suddenly his father dies and some of Andy’s will dies with him. When he finds a mysterious, old photo amongst his father’s things, Andy gradually solves the puzzle it brings up—and the certainty that the men in the photo have something to do with the case.
