Scones and Scoundrels

This series is written just for me, ok, not really, but it feels like it. The humor (Bampots), the luscious sounding foods, other than Haggis Balls,) and the friendships of the four Ladies running the Ye Bonnie Books and Bed and Breakfast with Tea Shop just instantly invite me into their storyland.

A Visiting residence author is coming. She hasn’t been back to Inversgail in over thirty years. In fact this woman lives in the wild woods of Canada. The past is the past and everyone is looking forward to Author Daphne Wood’s arrival, or are they?

A visiting American lad is felled outside the local pub, Nev’s. The community is shocked. What is going on? Then Daphne arrives with her Pekingese, Rachel Carson, and to most everyone’s surprise, no one actually likes her. She is a sharp-tongued one and seems to intentionally enjoy hurting others. There are other deaths, break-ins, and rumors of secret societies to keep this book a page turner.

My only issue with reading this novel was that it seemed about ten volumes too short. I truly love this entire setting which is filled with characters I’d love to know, and all I can hope is that another edition is being penned as I write this review. Outstanding novel!

Loved the book from the minute I started reading – would recommend to read Plaid and Plagiarism first and then this one to enjoy and be Familiar with the characters and their story – McRae tries to tell us who they are so we can understand the characters and how they got together. Story is easy to follow, definite page turner and who cant enjoy reading about life in the Scottish Highlands. There is a bit of Agatha Christie in her story – everyone is a suspect and Janet is a version of Mrs. Marple who is suspicious of everyone and in the end figures out why the visiting Author Daphne Woods acted the way she did and why she ended up dead.

Scones and Scoundrels does a good job of giving the feel of western Scotland, with its characters, their activities and the use of Gaelic sprinkled in. One of my favorite aspects of Molly’s writing is that she has such a great facility with words, sprinkling humorous word-play throughout, while developing the plot and the characters. Molly did a great job of keeping the reader guessing and tying up everything neatly at the end. plus it left me hungry for some of those scones!

Janet Marsh, her daughter and two other friends have gotten together to buy and run a bookshop/tearoom along the western coast of the Scottish Highlands. The shop is frequented by the eclectic townspeople as well as the many tourists on holiday. Canadian author Daphne Wood – formerly from “town” has returned after being absent from Scotland for 20 years – having won a writer-in-residence grant to teach. However, Daphne proves very demanding and difficult to everyone she meets. When people start dying Janet and her crew (called the SCONES) try to reason out the clues. But are they getting to close?? Are they next….?? Light reading.

I’ve been reading Scottish romances for years. It’s fun to find a mystery series set in Scotland, with a quirky cast of characters and featuring a bookshop I’d love to visit! I get a kick out of the Scottish slang, even if I have no idea how some of the words are pronounced!
