This is the story of a independent operative trying to prevent the assassination of a Ukrainian presidential candidate. Simple no? Not if you are Andrew Kaplan. For reasons unknown the Brooklyn born, raised and educated author throws every know literary trick into his story to make it a complicated mess. Instead of using cities like Odessa, Sumy or Lutsk he has his literary hero skulking through Dnipropetrovsk; Kyiv or Dnieper, and instead of characters named Oleg, Anton or Ivan his characters are known as Kozhanovskiy; Mogilenko and Shelayev. Then, when confusion is insufficient, he inserts Russian and Ukrainian phrases into the dialogue. The result….a potentially great tale of mystery, intrigue, romance and betrayal becomes a confused morass that leaves the reader\’s head spinning.

This is the second Kaplan novel I\’ve read based on scorpion. The first one I read scorpion betrayal, was enjoyable, but not on the level this one was. They center on scorpion-ex delta force ex CIA turned freelance operative. While betrayal was a good read, the writing done for scorpion winter, is far superior. The story is fast paced but not so fast as to make miss or not understand whats going on. Some espionage novels can drag out and offer to much story that doesn\’t seem relevant. This story is a perfect blend of action and intrigue done at an understandable pace. I would recommend this novel to fans of espionage and intrigue stories who\’ve read the 1000plus pagers and came away a little underwhelmed. This has about the right length and feel to it. 5 stars for a really strong and well written story! Look forward to Andrew Kaplans next scorpion novel. Thank you. T.C. McDonald

Audiobook Scorpion Winter (Scorpion #3) by Andrew Kaplan
This character can\’t seem to catch a break. He is sent into Russia to hopefully forestall an assassination. The he ends up almost getting killed himself. The reader has to wonder, whether this agent should have quit while he had the chance to do so. I don\’t know if he would have survived the attention of the russian jailors. He does manage to survive their tender ministrations, but I doubt that he would have come out of it without some permanent injuries. The story is well plotted, and it moves around without losing the readers attention. I would recommend it to readers of suspense novels. JRV

No one takes you inside the war on terror like Kaplan. The Scorpion series personifies our many shadow warriors, the life they lead and the skills necessary for them to defeat our enemies. Read Kaplan, you will find compelling thriller writing at a level not achieved by any other. JB

Very enjoyable. Exciting, with many historical details. Interesting characters. The author knows how to keep the suspense going. Am tempted to read more of his works.
