Shepherds Abiding

I’m making my way through this series way too fast but for some reason I skipped this because it seemed short. I realised my mistake when I was listening to book 10 (Home to Holly Springs) and picked up on some bits that I’d missed. I corrected this quickly by reading this very special short book set at Christmas time. Father Tim is as usual working on being a blessing to others and this time his plans include fixing up a nativity set for his family. He picks up the set from Andrew Gregory the antique dealer but they’re in lousy condition and he has to restore them. With help from some of the secondary characters, he manages to finish on time. I must say I was stressed out by how much he had to do before Christmas Eve, which is typical of all of our lives at that time of year. I loved the ending, which I won’t spoil here. I’ll say it again but these books don’t stand alone. Start with book 1 and you won’t have any regrets.

Father Tim is still chafing against being retired – hes busier than most 40 hour per weekers. Deep into the Advent season, Tim is pastoring a couple of needy folks and they in turn are helping him with his Christmas gift for his wife, Cynthia, which will be displayed for the entire town. An huge restoration project for a 22 piece Nativity set has drawn many into the fray!

One of the favorite hot spots in Mitford is the town Grill and the scenes that take place here are literary gold. For sure, if you had coffee or tea in your mouth, it would be spewed, mid guffaw, and a new t-shirt might be needed! The Grill is in danger of closing, another plot twist…

Christmas in July 2020 #23

The gentlest peace always falls over me as I read one of the Mitford Years novels. The humor, the sense of community and family reaches beyond the pages. I want to be friends with all the characters, I have no problem identifying with each person’s dialog.

It had been years since I last read book seven. I jumped into ‘Shepards Abiding’ and instantly was home again. What more can you want from a series? Nothing.

I reread my favorites of Jan Karon’s books each year and try timing this one to be read during the Christmas week because it always warms me up to the joys of the season – especially for those of us who have prayed the prayer surrendering our life to the Most High! All the delights of small town friendships, long term loving relationships, the beauties of advent church events and Christmas giving! That is quite a bit for a book, but it is so…both for my sad Christmases when I have felt lonely and for those when I am feeling blessed. A marvelous Christmas addition to the Mitford cannon!

i like all the Mitford books, but this book # 8 SHEPHREDS ABIDING, is my favorite
i reread it each Christmas and never tire of doing so
Father Tim and Cynthia truely love each other, GOD blessed them when HE brought them together and their love n caring for all the citizens of Mitford is amazing, especially their love for Dooley and his siblings
this story makes me happy and wish that it i lived in Mitford
